Garnier Nutrisse have some lovely shades of brown. They come with a fruit oil thing that is said to protect the hair too! And it leaves your hair VERY shiny!

I would say pretty unlikely. My best advice is to have someone else to lend a hand, I always have my sister or my mother to help. It can be tricky covering the back of your head and you don't want to end up with different coloured patches which has happened me before :o

I use natural hair dye from my local health shop. It's much milder on my scalp as it doesn't have all the harsh chemicals and it's practically odourless. Actually I found my hair improved in condition after using it.

The only horror story I ever saw was when my housemate used henna and left it in way too long

I just realised I've been dying my hair for longer than I haven't - if you know what I mean.

If you're unsure about what dye to go with, and you definitely want to do it yourself, maybe try a semi. It'll last for around 6-8 washes, so you can try the colours out and see which one you like best.

With regard to brands, I find L'oreal dyes (Feria for example) make my hair feel really brittle and coarse. I also find that Garnier colours fade very quickly, regardless of the colour (reds will fade quickest). Clairol are pretty good, and the Boots Botanicals dyes make my hair feel gorgeous, but it really varies from person to person. Make sure you do the patch test they recommend first. The last thing you want is an allergic reaction.

If you decide to go for a more permanent colour do a strand test too, so you can see what you'll be getting when you do your hair fully.

If you're very nervous about doing it yourself, and you don't trust friends or family to help, maybe go to your hairdresser - they are the professionals after all!
