shortening a putter

    Hi all,

I have a really old putter, standard length that I'd like to get shortened and re-gripped.
Could take up to 3 inches off it as I find I'm only 5'6 and my hand is down past the grip with the most comfortable position.

Question is, how much could I expect to pay for this, or could I simply do it myself?

Just forked out for a hybrid this week, so looking to save money if possible.
Based in Galway, so can easily drop in to Golf Style if its not going to be too expensive.

It should only cost you the price of the grip.

Can get it done for about €20. Go to any local golf shop or club and ask the pro/ sales guy to cut it to length and re-grip it. As stated already should only cost the price of a grip.

Be warned, sometimes shortening a putter can affect the balance of it.

Thats true but would rather shorten it and take my chances than play with a club I am not even gripping correctly ??

Just ask the pro in the shop to stick a couple of little lead weights on the back of it.

I had a putter cut down and re-gripped last year for €15 - the price of the grip basically. Would have been free if they could have saved the old grip, but it ripped when they tried blowing it off.

Thanks for all the replies folks - will look at getting it done next week.
Its an ancient thing, so well in need of a new grip.

I will eventually upgrade it, but I think its worth a go at shortening - probably ask them to stick the weights on it - thanks for that tip.

I'm away all weekend, not back til Monday evening, and out for a round early Tues morning before the shop will be open, so will see if I can get it done after that.

Went in to GolfStyle yesterday as I was too wrecked to play a round.
New grip and 3 inches shorter for only €10, nice one.
All done in 15 mins, and have tried it out on their little putting area, doesn't seem to have lost its balance, still seems fine too me.
Tested it some more at home and I have to say that it feels much better, am now holding it properly and feel it will be more steady in my hands & encourage a proper pendulum swing.

Of course the acid test will be to try it out on a round and see how I get on.
    Looking forward to it.

I shortened my TM Rossa putter by 4 inches about 4yrs ago, I'm 5'9. I found it got my eyes over the ball much better and have putter great with it, balance was not an issue.
