Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and if so what did they do to fix it ...

I've a 08 Toyota Auris and recently its started letting out a screeching/metal scraping sound while I'm driving. No pattern to it. A mate suggested it may be rust build up on the brake discs so I brought it into the the garage, explained the problem and they cleaned in and around the brakes and said it was Ok again. 3 days later and the noise is back. Not a drop of rain or even a driveen through a puddle in those 3 days so couldnt be more rust!

    Any ideas?

Possibly a stuck brake calliper cylinder or the alternator drive belt slipping?

If the former, a brake pad might be contacting the disk when you apply the brakes and not releasing properly afterwards, although uless the pads are worn out that would normally make a scraping sound rather than screeching. To find out you'd need to take off the wheels and try easing each brake pad away from the disk with a screwdriver. If the latter, tighten the belt:D

I have the exact same problem with my Auris. I happened first when the brake pads were worn and the springs were scraping off the disc and making the screeching noise. I had them replaced and it stopped for about 6 months. But recently it started again. My mechanic checked it over and can find nothing wrong with it at all. There is very little wear on the discs.

Someone suggested using some copper grease on the caliper to ensur that it moves properly, so I am going to do that in the next few days. Hopefully it will make a difference.
