I was just watching dragons den, a guy was selling his "Unique" iphone app.
Lets you identify a song that you hear on the radio, and immediately buy it from itunes......

    Shazam much?

The dragons got shafted, as they bought into it!

Grab radio is a good name, think it has possibility, does shazam work identical? Haven't used it, haven't used the radio on the iPhone come to think of it, does it even have a radio?

From what I can make out, the app allows you listen to radio on your iPhone and, if you like a song you hear, you can purchase it from iTunes via the app. Not sure if it's a groundbreaking idea or worth 50k investment..??

I cannot believe that guy got 50K. :pac:

Not one of them asked him was there a similar app on the market. Those dragons are going to feel like complete tools as soon as they talk to any iPhone owner. I was shouting at the TV!

Would love to hear the fallout.

It safe to say they all use a Nokia, anyone who uses a Sony would be well used to that kind of app!

I think he'll get NOTHING out of them - many of those so called investments don't go through when due dilligence is done etc.........yer man has'nt a hope of getting the 50k for his business when they discover shazam, and others out there in the marketplace.

You could well be right. I'm sure there are T&Cs that must be applied before the cash is handed over.

Shouting at the tv?..i was nearly at tvroaring at it.
I just cant understand why none of the dragons asked are there any similar apps on the market:confused:? I wonder what would of been his reaction.. I would of sent him packing straight away..telling him there's a much better app on the market.Shame that there wasnt any avid iphone/itouch users among the dragons would of really got a grilling.

Aboslutely ... In the UK one, probably only 50% of any of the deals get past the Due Dilligence phase.

I can see this one falling short, unless it has got some hook that Shazam, TuneWiki, or many other similar apps don't have. This could be possible, and they just didn't broadcast that detail on the show, because it'd give a competitor a chance to work on their own version of the feature.

Oh god I can only imagine my rage if I had seen this.

Can someone explain what on earth he needed the 50k for? Considering the only expenses he probably had were ordering pizza to the bedroom he wrote the program in, and maybe hiring a con artist to teach him to sell an already done idea to a bunch of computer-illiterate old men.

Ya, he already had the app, what was money needed for? Submitting to app store is free, and already done.
They also didnt care that he only owned 51%. So the 20% he sold, is that from his 51%? bringing him down to 31%? very odd.

I am going on Dragons Den next week with an App idea ...tell me what you think .

Its a really cool idea , basically I have an App the simulates a beer filling into a glass , but get this .....when you tilt the phone the beer looks like its pouring out , put it to your mouth it looks like your drinking a glass of beer .

    Cool or What !

I heard oul Bobby & Sean love a beer , think I have this one in the bag :D

MONTE CARLO HERE I COME ..or maybe just Montys Cafe Carlow .

I would say the 50k would be used to purchase & maintain servers to handle all the processing (it's not all done on the device). The more users they get, the more backend they'll need to cope with the load. I'm not sure what sort of licensing is required for this type of service, but 50k in the bank would make his company seem a lot more credible if he needed to go to the record labels.

Accept nothing less than 100k for 5% of your company.

That only values my Company/idea at €2 million ?

Why would I cut my throat with those estimates , If I take/factor the number of stout drinkers in the World , i predict sales of :

    3.5mil Year 1
    4.7 mil Year 2
8.9 mil Year 3 (reason for massive increase in revenue (year 3) is I have an idea in development for a music app that requires the users to TAP the screen to the beat of a song )

Remember they are investing in MIXEDNUTS INC not just my current APP .

but he'd have no reason to go to record labels, the sale is done thru' itunes who already have the agreements in place to retail the rocord co's offerings.

He wouldn't be selling the songs, but he might need a license to use them to compare against the recordings. I say "might" because I don't know the specifics there.

Its not qute like Shazaam, he has an app for each participating radio station. While you're listening to the station you can buy whatever song's playing, or just tag it so it comes up as a custom playlist in iTunes.

    Clever, I think.

Besides, an idea doesn't have to be unique to be successful, it just has to be marketed well.

And I suspect thats what the funds will largely be used for.

    A.

So by limiting it to particular participating stations, rather then all the recorded music on earth is clever?
Shazam lets you tag it, buy it from itunes, and then you can do what you want.

Maybe I'm just being wishful here, but assuming Apple gets it's finger out at some stage to implement the Nano-style FM radio on the iPhone at some point - it will surely offer the same function?

WunderRadio seems to have the same function though it doesn't appear to work.
(There's a "song info" link that pops up a buy in iTunes option)

24 hours on, the Cavan dragon is on the Late Late, drooling over the great investment made in Grab Radio. Obviously wasn't wasting his time today, on Boards.

The pair of them were only interested in plugging the stuff they'd individually put their cash in. Unashamedly so.

Gran Radio is very different to Shazam. Grab radio uses the metadata embedded in streaming radio to 'pull out' the track from iTunes. It is therefore far more reliable than Shazam (assumind that the station you are listening to correctly labels their tracks).

In the long run, this metadata is proprietry information belonging to the broadcaster and thus unless Grab radio, Wunderradio et al come to agreement with the various broadcasters, their future is not so good. Without having access to streams both of these services are nothing.

Grab radio does have some nice features including rating songs, localised advertising and the mapping feature.

I really hoped that there was a clever joke behind that link but alas no, I think I'll invent an app called Sarcasm Detector for iPhone for use in conjunction with web forums, that will eliminate any confusion in the future ;)

I know it's just a year ago but I just came across this thread. I have this app; when the radio station puts out song and artist info. you don't need Shazam. It also allows you to watch the Youtube video of the song and connect with the artist via. Twitter, Facebook and Myspace....And here's the the smart part of it. If the radio DOES'NT put out the song artist info. the app automatically detects it and a Shazam button pops up within the app. The other thing is that Sahazam has no radio built in. Come on lads supports Irish innovation.
