    This is a really annoying me as I should know it, but can't figure out or find anything on the interweb..

    What does the 'm' in Mcal stand for?

    Thought this would be a good place to post it..

    Well the m as far as I would know is Mega as its a big M- as in Mega Pascals(MPa), Mega Joules (MJ)!!!

    Yep, M is mega, m is milli, k is kilo,

    the mega is million so Mcal would be a million calories, while kcal is a thousand calories. Most people do not say kilo when talking of calories, unless you are speaking to a scientist you can presume if somebody says "1000 calories" they really mean "1000 kilocalories" . So a scientist would say the average man would need 2,500,000 calories per day, which is 2,500kcal or 2.5Mcal

    I have never heard Mcal being used before.

    Thanks a lot.

    It's used quite a lot in animal production research papers, but I just couldn't for the life of me remember what it stood for. Too embarrassed to ask my lecturer as I really should've known :o
