OK, this probably sounds stupid but I have came across a lens which is fixed focus. Is this a lens as simple as it sounds? Does it just have a fixed focus? The lens is a canon 50mm fixed focus, no F stop listed or any other details. Would this be of any use?
Sorry about all the questions

if it's fixed focus it's set at f/8 or f/11 so as to have everything in focus when shooting.

The small f/8 or f/11 apeture makes the lens suitable for sunny days but unusable in low light.

The description is like you wanted to buy a car and somebody told you that it is a van. And you would not know if it is Fiesta, Kangoo with three rows of seats or ex-ESB Transit. Quite different cars for different purposes.

You need to find more. Focal length, minimum aperture, make, model, mount type, age, what is the state of the lens.

Without that would be any further questions here a little pointless. Sorry.

Fixed focus is that the lens is focused onto one distance, but I really doubt that, the description meant most likely fixed focal length.

Thanks lads, I will see what else I can find out. Just sounded strange that a lens would have a fixed focus

The early version of the Olympus Zuiko 80mm f4 macro lens was fixed focal length I think. It was envisioned that it would be used with a focusing rail/bellows. The later version I have, has a focusing helicoid which allows a small focusing range.

So they do exist but, I think the lens in question is probably meant as manual focus or fixed focal length as already mentioned.

Some super wide-angle lenses are fixed focus.
