Contract expired - still working.

Asking on behalf of someone.

He has been on an 18 month, 12 month and 3 month contract up till now, all running consecutively.

He has been assured that his job is safe, and that another contract will be issued, but it has been nearly 3 weeks since his recent 3 month contract has expired.

What way does he stand now?

To clarify - he is talking to the employer, they are making good noises about contract renewal, he is currently working as if nothing has changed.

Is he a full time employee or is he a sub contractor ?

Full time employee, who should be made permanent in the future, but doesn't know wtf is going on at the minute.

To be exact, he's worked in a shop for a while now on a 12 month, 14 month and 3 month contract respectively, the last contract having 'ended' on the 31st March. He still continues to work in the shop though, without a new contract.
