Tints now not allowed 1-Apr-2010

Just come away from my NCT today. I've got my two side windows 50% tint. Had them done when I bought my car early 2006. Car failed the NCT as the guy said did not comply. I saw him pull over another tester, they both just looked at it, and I suspected this was going to be his story. He did not measure it as far as I could see.
So when he just said "failed", I asked him to show me the measurements etc. He just said "It's at 33% visibility and it has to be 65%". Could not produce anything further.
So now I've got to go and get the tints removed after having them safely on for past 4 years! Annoying. With a bit of digging on web I found this is the new remit they're working to - came in 2 weeks ago.

A friend was caught with this too. :(

How tinted is 65% visibility? Any picture examples?

Whats the car in their diagram, a citroen?

Surely figuring out that, would be more fun than discussing plebs and their tints!

    no harm tbh.
front side windows tinted looks ridiculous.

not trying to defend the tints - just want to tell others the story.

Actually, I think modified motors might be a better forum; moving thread now.

OP, what you're saying that happened contradicts this other thread thats going on. One of the NCT testers came in and gave his 2c worth on this issue and mentions that all testers have now got equipment to measure the window light transmission.

I wouldn't accept a verbal failure without been shown it on the equipment first.

My car failed the NCT today becasue I was told that the tint on the front 2 side windows was more than premitted .

I bought the car a few years ago secondhand with the windows the way they are . It passed 3 NCT since and I have been driving it round for at leat 4 years now if not more . Visability is find at night and i'm way passed being a boy racer .

So now i have been told to remove the tint from just the 2 front windows or replace them with 2 new ones . I agree with some of the mad dark tints shouldn't be allowed but I have never once found the tint on my car casuing any problems seeing out at night .

So would i be right in saying you could have your back 2 windows and rear window as tinted as you like?

I think its looks more rediculous when you have only the rear windows tinted. pointless really.

yes its a Xantia! I dont mind the tint failing, its failing cars on lettering size on number plates when they practically the same size give or take 3mm, this is ridiculous. i'm seein plates with Vivaldi font on them, fail those plates!!

Depends what cars they're on though. Most Jap imports would have just the 3 rear windows tinted and it looks great on them I think.

But it actually serves a purpose (child in the back) as opposed to just being put on all windows because it looks good(which most of the time it doesnt)

I'm with RHCP on this one. My Passat has all windows tinted at the lighter 33/66% and I think it'd just look stupid with only the rear windows done.

In my case I was often carrying a lot of IT equipment in the car so it was done for security as well as taking the edge of the sunlight (like AlMadden above I'm a bit old to be a boy racer as well!).

Still, it went through the NCT there in January without any hassle so by the next round it'll probably be someone else's car anyway.

This is how the car is now after I replaced the side windows at the weekend

I really wasn't fused about tinted windows the car was that way when i bought it. Just the hassle and money to replace perfectly good windows is what is getting me . If any thing the sun now gets to me when I drive when before the tint took care of it .

As for night driving I don't see any better out the side window now . I managed not to hit anyone in the 5 years I've had the car thank god . This really doesn't make it any safer .

Plus I would hope to god that I spotted someone before they got to side window of my car as this might be a bit to late to do any thing .

Oh i suppose the law is the law .

People are confusing the difference between light transmission and the level of tint.

The nct restricts the light transmission on the front 3 windows to 65%. Most tints will fail unless it was done in the last few months were window tinters were aware of the new regulations.

A 70% tint is the only one that will pass the new regulations, most car glass has a 95% tint in it from factory, a 70% tint will bring down the light transmission to 65% and be legal.

Tints are graded by the amount of light they let into the car, a 35% tint will let in 35% of light into the car, 20% will let 20% light in an so on. So the only tint that will pass the nct is a 70% tint on the 3 front windows.

The new reg's also mean that the windscreen can be tinted with a 70% tint, which was illegal before. Garda will have light testers to test tints on the 3 front windows on cars as well as the nct testers, the most they can do for now is tell you to take it off and may ask you to prove it's been removed.
