Lads I was at a local club hurling game tonight and what I seen was nothing short of a disgrace. A scuffle broke out between 2 players on opposing teams and when an umpire(member of one of the teams) went to intervene and stop it he got a belt of a fist from the opposing team player. The referee said he never seen it but i assume this player has to be reported and a hefty suspension applied.

Would like to know what people think?

I would prefer not to mention teams but it was junior hurling. I still cant get over it.

I hate this type of s**t at games. It gets us all a bad name.

The umpire is a match official and if he brought it to the referees attention the referee must repot it. When you say the umpire went in to break it up who did he pull away his own player or the opposition player?

Because he didnt see the incident doesnt mean he cant take action. However the umpire should not have gone in to seperate the players especially seeing as he was from one of the clubs. If the referee does not include this in his match report the umpire can go the Gardái as this is an assult.

My bet is unless the referee makes reference to it in his match report it wont be dealth with or unless the victims club make an issue of it.

I'll find out eventually anyway. Not in the Imokilly division at least?

Was this an accidental or intentional punch?

I think you have come this far you should name the clubs but leave out any player/officials name.

I was at a match about 12 years ago where a now top referee had his jaw broke with a punch. It was a horrible experience. Just for booking a chap, 2nd yellow he got a sly box and had no time to protect himself. It sent ashiver down my spine.

I can nearly 100% say it was intentional Orizio. He pulled the opposition player off his club, ate but still there was no fisty cuffs at that time so cant see why the player assaulted the umpire for pulling him off a player.

On another note the referee asked the umpire, would he like to report it after the game but i think he just walked off. Why ask should he report knowing full well that he should.

Sounds like there won't be much done about it so. Saw a player deck the ref in a game once (intermediate football). As far as I can remember the guy was banned for life.

The ban is (and should be in this case) 48 weeks for striking an official. I hate going to junior or underage matches because I usually end up doing linesman. The problem with this scenario is the refs often won't 'see' anything if they didn't appoint the umpires or linesmen (i.e. bring some friends along) and have to ask the teams for one each.

It's a pity that refs allow this to happen because people will refuse to help them (there are 3 refs in Galway that I will point blank refuse to go near a pitch if they are involved).

You'd be an idiot to stop a fight, unarmed, where the 2 parties involved are armed. On pitch same. With that said they should get a year suspension for striking an official.

I think GAA should go the route in rugby where no one is allowed to talk to the referee at all, full stop. There is never any reason to.
