Servicing Costs and value

Just checked what I paid last year for an annual service. Car is a Skoda Octavia,1.4 - mk2 model. It cost me €334 in a local Independant Garage.
I trust the mechanic 100% and have dealt with him for over 20 years.
According to printout Mechanic renewed Oil(full Synthetic), Oil flter, Air filter, Pollen Filter. He ran an Emission analysis and a full system Diagnostic. He then lists a very comprehensive 2 page checklist of visual and manual checks. Does €334 sound fair for this amount of work? Asking because Main Dealers are advertising what appears to be same service for a lot less. Also, is it neccesary to have emmissions and diags done every year? BTW milage per year is 15K.
    Thanks for any advise.

I'd call that a fair price for the work carried out, you obviously trust the mechanic and have been happy with him for the past 20 years. I'd suggest sticking with him, he appreciates your loyalty and will treat you accordingly.

Main dealers sadly don't have this reputation. We've all heard horror stories from them and i'd be of the opinion that the service they're offering will not be the same as your local.

Emissions don't 'need' to be checked but there's no harm in having it done, if there is a problem you're not aware of, i'm sure you'd be happier to know about it now and fix it than having it show up in the NCT next year and possibly costing you an arm and a leg! Same goes for diagnostics, there's no 'need' for them on a consistent basis but if there's a problem it'll be found.
