I took this shot at the weekend... You can do 80kph on this sh1tty little road - but you can only do 60kph on the N11.

    Good old Ireland!

Anyone got any pics of ridiculously low speed limits on perfectly big wide and safe roads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,262 ✭✭✭Vertakill

Lol that first pic is especially bad considering you've no idea what's on the other side of that dip (presuming that's a dip) until it's probably too late.

It doesn't really work like that, there could be a good reason for a low limit that's not visible in the pic.

I'll get one for you this weekend.

N32, 4 lanes wide with a median..... 60kph. Not even in a built up area. there is nothing either side of the road.

the reason its 60kph is because the travelers kids keep getting knocked down, there is a halting site on the side of the road about half way up it. There is a pelican crossing there but someone keeps smashing the lights on it.

Garda have speed traps their regularly... it's like shooting fish in a barrel!

Knocking the kids down or the people getting shot by the speed gun? :pac:

There are horses on this road from time to time, also are there not a number of institutions? Cars seem to have difficulty emerging from those.

If somebody gets caught speeding on the N32 they deserve the ticket just for being a bit thick. :pac:

The (apparent) lack of hazards, straightness of the road and low speed limit should set alarm bells ringing.

that road is a joke alright horrible coming off the m50 and then having to crawl, dont even know why they ever put the bus lane there, one bus used it a long time ago and went up it very rarely.

there where signs there that it can be used by anyone but they have been removed ,i dont think by anyone official

I know of one road (which is fine, it's not some crooked little backroad) and there's two different speed signs. The one on the left says 50 km/h and on the right 60 km/h - and no, one hasn't been turned around as it's the same from the other side!!

I hate to be awkward, but they look like temporary signs to me?;)

We all know that there are many roads with unreasonably low limits, I just don't think that it's possible to show that the limit is too low with a pic.

did you take the challenge? :D

Yes, they are I'm sure. But why bother putting them up - asking people do do a speed which 99% are just going to ignore - and probably do about 80-100kph which most people would feel acceptable n a road like this. It just completely undermines the integrity of speed limits overall.

It's like the 60kph on the M50 that if you did obey you'd have people beeping at you and cause large traffic buildups. Just seems a bit stupid to me.

There is a road like that with a surface quality which is like two of those roads stuck side by side and its 100 and you still have to do 80 on the old N4.

100 or 110 should be the speed limit on the new road by the Lucan Spa hotel. 80 there is quite slow.

To be fair the pic of the road Berty posted doesnt seem that bad. I'd have no bother tippin along at 80kmph on it. That first pic though the road looks to be in a bad state.

    Anan1 wrote: »

    Nope
I'm dead serious. The kids up there are getting knocked down all the time.

Last year 1 was killed. (60kph speed limit was already in place)

I think when the road opened it was 80kph. Which is what it should be (it's a main road off the M50)
Perhaps where the road passes the halting site it should be dropped to 60kph. (from there to Clare hall)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

Anyone who actually goes 80 on some of those roads clearly doesnt understand the basics of driving.

The roads obviously have classifications either rightly or wrongly that hae a limit of 80. Some guy in an office without actually knowing the road then sends out an order to stick up signs on every road with that classification.

It's up to drivers to know better. It's not ideal but if ou do go barrellign down some of those lanes at 80 and crash, personnally I wouldnt be blaming the guy that put up the sign.

I dont have any pics of it, but theres a section of the naas road just after the red cow roundabout thats straight, and 3 lanes wide and the speed limit is 60 kph.

I know because i got done for speeding on it was doing 85 kph couldnt believe it when the gard told me the speed limit was 60.

The section that has pedestrian lights and multiple business with entrances straight out on to the carriageway and where people have been run over down through the years?

no i dont think that the section your thinking off, theres no pedestrian crossings, one or two business with entrances out onto it but they all have there own lil slip roads for getting on aswell, and possibly people have been knocked down over the years but not that ive heard of anyway.

Which side of the red cow are you talking about? Between the red cow and Kylemore or between red cow and Newlands cross?

I very rarely use the section from Red cow to Newlands (dont think I've used t at all since the recent upgrade works) but inbound is it not 80 or 100, dropping to 60 at the red cow?

Between the red cow and kylemore.

That is the section that has pedestrian crossings (2 , one at woodies and one at FBD) which is quite worrying if you havnt noticed them.

You can see them quite clearly by the road markign on Google earth if you want to check.

There were people run over at both these crossings in my memory. Probably more I dont know of.

The Truck place (harris) lets out on to the road.

On the red cow side there are loads of businesses directly on the side of the road between Woodies and the red cow.

The woodies pedestrian crossing is near to the end of it before you come to the spaghetti junction so that doesnt really come into play as youd be braking for the junction by that point anyway. im trying to think were fbd is along that road?

Are you talking bout heading towards inchicore? or newlands cross?

Theres a 140m gap between the pedestrain lights and the junction, plenty of people wont have started braking until they have well sailed through the pedestrain lights

Just before the junction at Kylemore road theres a tun into JFK industrial estate. It's just there.

Yeh that may be true but if you are paying attention to the road you should be able to see light going green, red? think most people do since ive never heard of someone getting knocked down there, or seen a a memorial spot either and i do live in the clondalkin area so sure i would hear if someone did.

Oh right didnt know it was there i do be to busy driving to notice the name of all the companys along there:p.

You have made a good point but it is also a straight road with 3 lanes and if people are driving like they should, they should notice lights when they go red, green etc.

Now im not saying make it a 120 either but 60 kph is a bit extreme.

I used to work in Mcdonalds in Kylemore many moons ago. I personally saw 2 cars drive straight through the pedestrain lights without even realising in my time there.

I also had a landcruiser drive straight through the pedestrian light at Cheeverstown on the N81 just after the Spawell after I was given a green to cross and was about to step out.

Either I'm the unluckiest person alove or it happens quite regularly.

Both those roads have low speed limits and imp they are justified.

The N4 all the way to leixlip is 80 kph.

N1 goes to 120 kph within about 1km of the turn from the m50

    N7 100 to naas.

N11 yo yo is not the word.

    Consitency not a hope.

we all know this but i'll say it anyway, speed limits are the maximum permitted speed on the road. Adjust your driving to suit the conditions. Nobody (well almost nobody) does 80kmph into a right hand hairpin.

Some of the speed limits on country roads are crazy.

However this is my personal favourite. It's meant for boats but is close enough to the road to confuse a driver that is not local! Oh this is near Leitrim Village by the way

Indeed, good point however I feel I could drive 100 on some roads and say that suits the conditions despite 80 limit. I know I could say I feel safe driving at 180 on a motorway and say I feel that suits the conditions but that's extreme stuff. But I know we are talking about tiny roads with relatively huge limits. It just doesnt make sense when you have a huge road with an oddly low limit.
