I'm pretty sure you can see the centre of the milky way from Ireland, but i could be wrong. I saw this video of it taken in America and its pretty cool.

We can't see the centre of the Milky Way in visible wavelengths, it can only be seen using x-ray telescopes, because of the amount of dust in the galaxy blocking out starlight. Afaik what we see in the night sky as the band of "nearby" stars overhead is from the Orion arm of our spiral galaxy.

This is an amazing photo, both is scale and quality and the amount of detail in the night sky that is lost due to light pollution.

The best time to see it visually folks is in the Summertime looking south. Here is a shot from Co.Waterford:

The centre of our galaxy hugs the horizon, whilt the spiral arms extend upwards. Get yourself out under dark skies and have a look, it's a very nice sight!

Never thought you could see it from here. Was in Yellowstone last year and thought it was a cloud, but figured out it was the Milkyway after a while.

It makes me sad too! I've been planning to go on a camping trip this summer just so I can see the night sky properly, for the first time!

This article says to look towards the constellation of saggitarius to find the galactical centre

I call shenanigans on this image, it's a definite Photoshop composite view.
It is not a 'photo' as you would think, but a blend of different images. The galaxy portion is not even a 'visible to the naked eye view'!

Dowload Stellarium and it should let you know where it is in the night sky and when you could see it.

Why would you want to look at the centre of our galaxy, there's nothing there but a big hole ;)

True - good Sir - but we are nowhere near the center of the Milky Way. We are out on one of it's spiral arms, and therefore should easily be able to look into the heart of our own galaxy.

It's been a crazy week dude. I had to get the EuroCoach home to Ireland last week (on the ferry) for my brother's wedding last Saturday. As soon as I come back, my research kicks-off all of a sudden and there's tonnes to do. Actually, I met a guy from the Marine Institute at the wedding! His wife is the aunt (I think) of my brother's wife. Confused? - so am I.

I wish I was in the heart of the Milky Way.
