I am looking to send in my forms for rent relief, looking to claim for the last 4 years, I believe I will be able to get a refund. I rang the tax office but they were not able to tell me how much I would get, is there any way of calculating how much of a refund I will get?

Depends on your circumstances. If you are single under 55 it will be worth €400 per year to you provided you have paid more than €2000 rent in any given year. Double that if you are married. See rates below from Revenue website. You can only came for four years previous i.e 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

Personal Circumstances Tax Year 2009 Tax Year 2010
    Single Under 55 max. €2,000 €2,000
    Single Over 55 max. €4,000 €4,000
    Widowed/ Married under 55 max. €4,000 €4,000
    Widowed/ Married over 55 max. €8,000 €8,000
