Lifestlye of a Pilot

    Any Ryanair or Aer Lingus pilots out there tell us about your lifestyle and what are the pros and cons of it all?!

    Would be great to get some insight!

    a mate of mine is with with FR afaik the shift pattern is 5 on 4 off early shift/late shift, also depends the freighter boys do mainly night time flying.

    my old company the guys would fly two sectors a week just say they leave.
    MEM 2100z tuesday and arrive in STN at 1500z on the wednesday.
    they would then rest wednesday and position out of STN thursday evening back to MEM.

    It's pretty much exactly like that Virgin ad except we drop iPhones.

    Really depends on the company you work for and indeed the type of flying that you are doing i.e. Airline flying short haul/long haul, flying SAR helicopters, Flight Instruction, Aerial survey and photography work, Corporate jets and so on...

    Regardless of the type of work you can expect long hours, working bank holidays etc, interrupted sleep patterns, a nomadic lifestyle and so on.

    Apart from the actual enjoyment I get from flying an aircraft I wouldn't be in a hurry to encourage someone to become a Pilot unless they were absolutely aware of how it can obstruct a person from having a normal family and social life as well as the costs of training etc.

    It certainly is not as romantic as the average person thinks. Needless to say people get the wrong impression from ad's like that one by overlooking the fact that they are tongue-in-cheek.

    well said people forget that if flying @0530 your probely in the ops room for 0430(which means probely getting up at 0300)i worked for a major airline for eight years the only days off over xmas for me was xmas day.
    and yet people thought my job in ops was cool my friends father is ATC and they work 365 at least if i go the whole way fATPL i now what im getting myself in for:D

    My life isn't bad but then again I don't fly for either of those esteemed Irish airlines mentioned :rolleyes:
    I even have an extra few days off to add on to my month off now because of the ash :)
