My friend has just got a full time job. He is currently on social welfare, what type I don't know. The question he has is this - how can he move into his new job (starting in 2 weeks) and avoid emergency tax. What does he need to do to get the tax affairs in order before starting new job. Does he need to call into the tax office and dole office or both and in what order? Any help appreciated.

I'd imagine he needs to inform the social welfare before he starts his new job.

To avoid paying emergency tax your mate should find out his new employers PAYE registration number. Once he has that ring the Revenue PAYE helpline on 1890 222425 and tell them he wants to register as an employee with whoever the employer is.

Lucky mate you have finding a new job in Cork :D not easy

Thanks for that Jock - he was very lucky, Thurles though and the pay is ****e. A job is a job though, much more of Dr.Phil and he would have been heading for the river!
