Modeo 2.0 TDCI would make for a comfortable and reasonably cheap commute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭DUBLINHITMAN

    One on carzone in
    right price cars
    9,995
plenty of miles but it's the cheapest I've seen

Really depends on what size car you want, maximum engine size you are willing to pay motor tax on and your buying budget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

actually may have to go down to 2004 as the max i could probably get hold of would be around 6500

406HDi or Rover 75 if you don't mind going a bit older than 05, get a well cared one of either with 100K miles or so on it and you should see another 100K miles at 50+ mpg Cork to Limerick return with ease.

i dont mind paying the tax on 1.9 but idealy a 1.4/1.6 tcdi disel would be cheaper on the tax but are these engine sizes more so for the 07 upwards?im driving a 99 renault kangoo van at the min, costs about 50 euro maybe just under to fill the tank does about 450miles for a full tank, has 90,000 miles on the clock but its not viable for the future looking at starting a family in the next 12 months

Well then this won't be any worse. I dare say it'll come cheaper than the asking price....

Limerick to Cork and back is about 120 miles per day x 5 days, is roughly 600 miles per week. For doing this kind of mileage I would be looking at something comfortable that is well able to cruise and overtake when needed. A small car or small capacity engine may not be the most suitable for this.

I would be aiming for a mid or large size family car like a Focus or Mondeo with a diesel engine that doesn't struggle to pull the car.

Limerick - Cork and back five times a week in a Yaris? Death would be a relief by about day three.

Mondeo/Pasaat/5er sized car would be a must imo, particularly as the op is planning to put some young'uns in the back soon.

2005 1.9 tax is 640 or something unless you go commercial
but you,ll probably want your comfort on long journeys
really not sure maybe a golf tdi

You can't really go wrong with a Mondeo to be honest. Can be had for peanuts, decent spec, comfy, nice to drive, usually cheap to fix if it does go wrong and plenty of choice.

The 90 brake diesel is underpowered (apparently), but the 115 brake is fine and seems to avoid the injector problems of the 130 brake. Also, a 6 speed box like the 130's would be lost Limerick to Cork everyday. You'll rarely get fast enough to cruise comfortably making the 5 speed 115 brake the nicer drive IMO.

I have to agree with EPM here, and disagree with a previous poster who was promoting overtaking power - you just won't gain anything by overtaking on this awful road at high volume times. Just shuffle along with the rest of them in a massive convoy at 70-80kph.

I overtake every chance I get on that road, but thats on one off trips.
If you try to make time on that road 10 times a week you'll end up taking too many risks, or you'll end up on blood pressure medication.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,352 ✭✭✭alias no.9

I'm thinking you want something with an autobox for that amount of driving on that road, ideally with cruise control, and you'll need to develop the discipline to leave a good distance between you and the car in front with cruise control set to match thier speed. This gives you plenty time to react to the inevitable accordioning of traffic, will maximise your economy and will leave you in control of both your sanity and your blood pressure.

This Landed in Ireland for about €3750
£2500 plus ferry and expenses plus vrt of less than €800
Ok has high miles but at that price its disposable and not clocked by somebody else !
110 bhp (very quick) and 60 plus mpg

Alternatively you'd get a Civic IMA within budget. 1.3L, so cheap tax, 65mpg without trying on a trip, and they're well specced out of the factory with leather as standard. 100k mile/8yr warranty on the IMA stuff (vs 2yrs on the turbo in a diesel, which will be long up in your case). Only thing I'd like in mine would be cruise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

to be honest wouldnt be too worried bout cruise control its nice to have but wouldnt be top of my list, cheers for all the info lads im looking around to see the best bargins at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

bad news can only get hold of 4,000 at the moment which kind of limits my options rules out 05 cars for defo, like the look of the mondeo's,anyone see any bargin 115bhp mondeo's going for 4000 or in around that doesnt have to be a mondeo something similar would also do

There was a Mk1 Insight on Carzone a while back for 4k. Aluminium (no rust) 2 seater coupe that'll do close to 100mpg on journey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭glic83

needs to be bigger than that as im looking at starting a family in the next 12 months so id need something in the mid-large range

EDIT ...forget it ...this one is a scam ...came across a few more though at a slightly higher price

the HDI engine should be good for another 100.000 miles
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200840190257073

    and there's your Mondeo
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201014197560627

and another one, with a bit of tweaking on the price

nothing wrong with a saloon ..but once you've had your first estate you'll never go back.

You mentioned something about starting a family ...the estate will swallow whole prams and a months supply of pampers no problem...and then some

    just something to consider

OP, I'm doing Cork / Dublin twice a week and am in the above, 80k kms in the past 2 years and touch wood, nothing bar standard service and replacing tyres need to be done - it's comfortable and sturdy, given the speeds you'll be doing and the increased risk, it's worth having a solid body of a car.......btw, am getting 50 - 52mpg out of it!!!

hard to beat a good 04/05 highline passat

big safe comfortable reliable and will do 55mpg if you have a light foot..nice bit of power compared to the 1.6d or 1.4d suggestions

not much that goes wrong with them apart from maf sensors that are only 80 to replace,,what car hasnt got a common fault?

will look the part to if you like,18inch amg alloys/rs6 alloys and your flying
