    Today marks the 49th anniversary of Vostok 1 When Yuri Gagarin became the first human to fly to space in 1961.

    It also marks the 29th anniversary of STS-1 when John Young and Robert Crippen flew on Columbia the very first Space Shuttle in 1981.

    I did not exist for Gagarins flight but remember STS-1 very well. What a day. I was a young Beeker then just 14 but had waited quite a while for that day. I started reading about the Shuttle since 1976 when the two Vikings landed on Mars. That was what got me hooked on Spaceflight.......and I never grew out of it:) The launch of STS-1 was at the time the most exciting even in my short life and it changed me and started me on a life long interest {or obsession as my Wife calls it} in the Space Shuttle. I was lucky to meet STS-1 commander John Young many years latter.

    Not to put a sour on things,but since the KGB files were sold after the collapse of the Soviet Union,there seems to be a lot of evidence that Gagarin 'MAY' not have been the very first man in Space,No doubt that he did Go into Space.

    The very Strong rumours are that the ACTUAL first Cosmonaut was another man but his parachute had a partial failure and the Vostok engine that was to slow the descent down even further failed leaving him badly injured and unable to be presented to the world,the story continues that Gagarins Launch was just a few days later So HE got the credit.

    I hate CT's but this one carries a lot of substance.

    Just a mention of Sergi Korolov who was the USSR equivalent of Wernar Von Braun and Always tried to put his Cosmonauts first despite bad funding and 'Orders' from Moscow he did not agree with.

    He treated them like his own family and the Cosmonauts looked up to him as their HERO!
    He was a GREAT man.

    Lot's of Americans like to think that "technically" Alan Shepherd was the first man in space as Yuri's craft didn't land back on earth with him in it. By their definition man and craft must launch,orbit the earth and return together,not man and craft separate.

    Smacks of begrudgery to me tbh.

    but the first(s) Vostoks were before either Shepard or Glenn{You proably know Glenn had to pee inside his spacesuit because of a four hour launch delay,uncomfortable enough in gravity...........imagine how uncomfortable must it have been when the pee entered his helmet once in orbit:eek::)
    which was cut from a planned 7 orbits to 3 over worries about his heat shield.He made the extra orbits up at age 77 on STS-95 though:){as You know}

    The Gagarin argument comes partially from KGB files and documentries from 'eye witness's'
    As far as i could ever find nothing could be confirmed 100% by any source though:confused:

    What about 133. Have they ruled out any EVA's during the final flight. I thought I read that at least one was planned but I can't find any reference to that now:confused:

    To the best of my knowledge they've no planned EVA's for STS-133. It'll be as basic a mission as it gets.

    This link is to a page on the NASA site,if you scroll down to the left You can see the remaining Shuttle missions,which has been looking more and more pathetic over the last two years.

    Strangely it has changed very recently and does not mention even the final three spacewalks that all along it was saying were to take place on 132.

    It still confirms that 131 is the final seven member crew before retirement.

    So unless Something weird hapens on Thursday after Obama's speech{or may'be it is down to the uncertainty about the 132 payload}134 was to be just a re-supply and 133 just a lap of honor really{thankfully turning Leanardo into a permanent module at least justified it! and who knows may'be its installation may require a spacewalk?}

    Like i said it is a section i have checked out often and last time was very recently,It was consistant about crew,payload and mission purpose.
    all that information has been removed,but We have got used to NASA's right arm not knowing what its left arm was doing for well over a year now at least on its website:mad:

    Mind games or just genuine confusion by NASA staff?
    who knows? all the reports seem to be saying Baracks speech is just to justify his decisions to the KSC staff,ffs why does'nt he stop announcing when he will make an announcement and just fcukin make them!:mad:
