Looking for work abroad and signing back on

Well I've been unemployed for 10 months. I don't want for it to go a year, so I've booked a flight to London. I'm hopeful that I'll find a job there, as unemployment is lower and there are a lot more positions to apply for. But, in the unlikely event that things go wrong, if I return to Ireland will I be able to sign back on?

    Hi PrinceMax

If you are getting Jobseeker's Benefit (JB) at the moment, you should be able to transfer your Irish payment to the UK while you look for a job. This can last for up to 13 weeks.

If you have been getting JB for 10 months, you would most likely have 2 months of JB entitlement left. In this case, you would be able to transfer the JB payment abroad for those 2 months.

In general, you need to return to Ireland within 13 weeks to continue the JB claim. If you only have 2 months of JB entitlement left, you would need to return within the 2 months to be able to continue the JB claim.

More information here (see part 10): http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/jb_jobseekben.aspx#part10 and here: http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=600&langId=en

If you are getting Jobseeker's Allowance (JA) at the moment, you won't be able to transfer the payment. If you move to London and come back, you should be able to start a new claim, with the proviso that all JA claimants have to be 'habitually resident' - this would be up to the deciding officer.

More information on habitual residence here: http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/habres.aspx
