    Hi,

    11.15 pm (approx), 10th April 2010.

I'm about 10km East of Athlone.

Had put the telescope away for the night last night and decided to take one last look around with the (Lidl :) ) binoculars.

On the way in and roughly under Algol and Almaak (NW) at about 11.15pm I saw what looked like a bright white/blue firework falling in front of my eyes.

MUCH too fast for a firework. About 1/2 (?) the size of a full moon high in the sky. And VERY bright.

It was falling roughly towards the North (from South). Towards earth at approx 30 degrees to the horizon (but was falling away from me).

    Anyone else see it?

Then I turned around for one last look towards Saturn....AND

A wider, but dimmer yellow/red 'flare' parallel to Earth heading roughly North to South. Roughly under Regulus (but more overhead relative to me).

I'm old enough to have seen plenty of 'shooting' stars high in the atmosphere, but these were the two brightest and most dramatic I've seen.

    Chuffed :D

    Peter

I didn't see anything myself but I did hear someone on the radio this morning saying they had seen a bright slow meteor at a little after 5 am. Is there a meteor shower on around this time?

About that time it could have been Venus.

It was very bright the past week nearly like the lights of a plane on landing.

To the right of that you may have seen a dimmer dot. That's Mercury.

Dragged my middle child out a few nights ago:

"See those two dots over there? Venus and Mercury" (West North West)
    Turned her round,
" See that yellow/orange dot up there? Mars" (South)
    Left a bit....
"See that dot over there? Saturn!" (South East)

"We can see 5 planets with the naked eye in our solar system tonight!"

    Pretty cool :)

Mercury is just to the left and above the moon. quite faint but you can just make it out.
    (Venus is the other one)
