Did anybody catch any pics of the large Air France aircraft at Dublin today? I seen it taking off and it looked pretty big, like a large Airbus. I presume they had it chartered for the rugby match on Friday.

It wasn't the AF Cargo 777 was it? Does that still fly on Saturdays?

I don't think the T7 has been here in a while. They switched it back to the 747 didn't they?

Yeah that was probably it, I got a bit confused as i thought Airbus would have had a mainly Airbus fleet. Its a pretty nice 777 anyway.

    What age are you??:pac:

Its out of frame in the shot, surely you didnt think a 747 had those short wings? And 3 engines to top it off?

Although I have seen a B747 with 5 engines taking off before!! ;) (ferrying a spare engine)

Interesting comment. I don't know about the B747 but it is possible to ferry a B707 with only 3 engines operating (the 4th engine still needs to be installed for W&B reasons). Tricky on take off.

that picture is quite misleading because of the angle at which it is taken.. it looks like the 4th engine should be in the picture because of how close the other two engines appear on the other wing but it is just the angle at which the picture is taken

EI-BED (cn 19748/44) Unusual sight of a five-engined 747! (spare engine tucked under its wing with a streamlined cone to reduce drag)

I wonder how they mount it on? Have Beoing made spare mounting points for engine ferrying or do they just take a drill and an angle grinder to the underside of the wing?!? Or maybe they cable tie it on... :D

The Air India 747 that was blown up off the southwest coast in 1985 also had a fifth engine on it.

There are mounting points on the underside of the wing inboard of engine #2 but you need a ferry kit to connect between the engine and the wing.

Ah sure they can strap on an engine anywhere on these yokes ;)

It was an option when you got the aircraft. Some airlines (like Aer Lingus)opted for the option to mount an extra engine pod inboard of the number 2 engine for ferry purposes.

....but at the same time a bit of extra cable can only help the situation....
