    Obama due to make what is called a "major space policy speech" next Thursday 15th April at the Kennedy Space Center. Will he reverse his decision? I don't think so, but let's see what he has to say:confused:

    Guess We better watch this SPACE{I know even by My standards that is terrible:)}

    I thought i heard something on the Six-one about that{room was noisy}but decided either RTE or I must be on drugs!

    Wonder what trade offs he may have had to do to get the Health care bill through???? and as You know from other threads We discussed this on I did not believe that his only contact with Bolden was the twenty minutes in the Oval office and thought Bolden should have resigned rather than oversee the Disaster that was proposed.
    I thought there might be some brinksmanship with America's partners to force them to cough up more of the expense,but may'be it's more to do with the Senators&Congressmen in States like Ohio that NASA contracts were worth 1.1 BILLION to!

    As You of all people know the Logistics of keeping the STS flying{even two a year}have reached the point of No return unless We have been lied to!

    I like him,I like that he got the Health care plan through.I like that nucleur weapons are being reduced again.
    His proposed 'strategy' made NO sense at face value and appeared to be a major fail from a guy who is a bit of a tech freak and used tecnology to fund his campaign.

    sorry i am going on a bit,but i think most of us are hoping for SOMETHING to keep our dreams alive!

    Thursday seems a long way off now as if Human Spaceflight lovers were not teased enough from the commissioning of the Augustine report,the long wait for its recomendations,then the long wait for Obamas disasterous response.

    were We sucked into a political game?Can We even believe what We will hear on Thursday?:mad:

    Not a chance:) the speech is at the Kennedy Space Center where there are due to be thousands of job losses later this year due to the retirement of the Shuttle. He has a lot of very unhappy and angry people to talk to. Good luck to him:eek:

    We are going backwards, I know it costs astronomical amounts of money (he he), but we have to find out more about what's out there

    It's a slow process and it cost lots of money. The problem has always been trying to convince the politicians that it is worth spending money on research and exploration.

    It'll definitely be interesting to see what he has to say.

    I hope it's major re-investment in college grants for students, so I can go study over there for cheap cheap!

    I haven't popped in here in a while(insane amount of work to do).

    And *aways* until after the speech! Or maybe tomorrow?! :O

    We choose not to go to the moon or Mars in this decade and do the other things, because they are Hard, because being goaless will serve to organize and measure the lack of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are unwilling to accept, one we are willing to postpone, and one which we intend to Lose, and the others, too.
    It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts away space from low to no gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency.

    President Obama,You are NO John F Kennedy!:P

    meanwhile America seem's to belatedly waking up and smelling the Coffee{now that it has'nt got a bean}a day of protest was held on Sunday in many States across America,Proably the most noteworthy was attended by the crew of Apollo 13 who's 40th Launch anniversary was Yesterday and tomorrow will be the anniversary of the infamous "Heuston We've got a problem"{Heuston has an even bigger problem now:eek:}

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article7094862.ece

    In further Leaks.Obama is going to say: "General Bolden,Ask not what You can do for NASA,but what NASA can do for YOU!"

    The logical part of my brain tells me that there's no way Obama is going to go to KSC to tell the NASA contractors in person the bad news. The cynical part of my brain reckons there'll be loads of spin and it'll be made sound like there'll still be jobs on the space coast.

    I've a strange feeling the cynical side is going to win out.:(

    I read somewhere that he's giving an extra 2 billion dollars to the NASA budget. Is this what the speech will be about? There'll certainly be a lot of toing and froing in NASA once the shuttle fleet retires. I have the feeling that he's going to promote more graduates applying to NASA from both in the US and abroad.

    ...just a hunch.

    :rolleyes:

    ynotdu, the good times will return for Ireland I'm sure. They took the brave step to make the cuts long before other nations in similar dire straits did. You have to put the head down and get on with what you've got right now.

    It seems like this speech will be on at around 7PM our time. I just found this snippet of info:
    Air Force One Scheduled Arrival: 1:30 PM
    Air Force One Scheduled Departure: 3:45 PM
    Ref: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/news/releases/2010/release-20100412b_prt.htm

    That's in that silly EDT time though. Anyway, it'll be on NASA TV I think.

    " More than a dozen astronauts and NASA staff have sent a letter to President Obama criticizing his plans to end the shuttle program and cancel the Constellation program. They point out that thousands of people will lose their jobs. They also say too many men and women have worked too hard and sacrificed too much to see their efforts needlessly thrown away. You can read the letter here."

    Hi,ya Stargate i posted on another thread that the remaining two Apollo 13 crew were part of a belated day of protest last sunday.
    For Buzz Aldrin to have given such a endorsement of Obama's policy surprised Me very much.{He had been against a return to the Moon since the Apollo 11 40th anniversary,saying "America has been there,and should go straight for the goal of a Mars landing".Gene Cernan{last man on Moon was particulorly critical of Aldrin}

    Even more surprising was Beekers thread about Neil Armstrong adding his name to a letter of protest as getting Armstrong to say ANYTHING has always been like a tooth extraction.

    I think some threads here badly need to be merged rather than new one's being started by people who seem to be more interested in being 'noticed' by ignoring others and starting new threads about the very same subject!

    Aldrin is still bitter at being 2nd man on the moon. He's whoring himself out to "dancing with the stars" and other bollox like that. He always came across as a sore loser to me tbh.

    I'm locked btw so if this makes no sense i'll edit it tomorrow.:)

    Lol at the I'm locked bit!

    Well he certainly was bitter at being 2nd,became alcoholic,Recovered and even punched a CT'r on the nose when he and his wife were leaving a cinema and he lost paticience at One jibe too many that Apollo 11 never happened.

    I do not believe he is a bitter man now in the least,He worked hard to "Change He could believe in;)"

    No he simply meant that it does not matter if another Nation landed on the Moon as there is six American flags there already! and the Myth of Helium 3 has been so debunked,It is clearly not a present danger to the USA for at least 20 Years even if another Nation is the next to land.

    He wanted a goal to go directly to Mars{last year}
    without any retro technology or 'stopping off points'
    I think he genuinely meant that as the best way to go.
    His Statement Supporting Obama's decisions on Augustine were far too enthusiastic for My liking though.

    Hi SG,Soz there was no post by You before i replied to LL.
    I don't think He has any hidden agenda.
    just what he thinks is best.
    Imagine 40 Years ago at about this moment We would all have been Crapping as to whether or not the Lunar Module's engine would fire when it was fired at the 'out of range' side of the Moon,if it had failed they were DEAD!

    We have been interested in what he had to say since he first turned the spotlight on NASA and appointed Augustine to investigate.

    If his Speech today has SOMETHING new,It will break ALL records for Launch posponements:D

    I still stand by what i said though,Aldrin's always bugged me,mention the moon and he turns up. Armstrong has always been much more humble about it all. I think i'm just biased towards Aldrin tbh.

    Sounds good guys... I mean, retaining Orion in some form. I think that the moon mission originally planned was just too elaborate to go ahead with (the Orion, Ares, Altair moon lander mission).

    It seems that Obama can do no wrong these days. It has taken a year into his presidency but he's making big changes recently - fair play to the guy.

    Im here in my labcoat - all bright, shiny, and white.

    That's true but if you develop the capability of a manned craft even if only for emergeny use, it would not take much to man rate a booster to fly it, say an upgraded Delta. It gives hope:)

    At least he admits the STS programme should continue until a succesor is developed.
