Upgrading to include UPC BB and Phone

    Hi all,

My area was recently upgraded with the new super duper UPC fibre cable. I'm on the standard Cable TV digital package and as I have a home office I have BB and a business phone line from Eircom.

I'd now like to ditch Eircom and switch my business number and BB to UPC as well as upgrade to Digital Max with HD and the ability to record movies and TV series etc.

Does anyone know if UPC will switch my account from a private residential account to a business account without too much hassle? Are there any extra charges? I'd like the business to be invoiced and will set up a DD to the busniess bank account. I'd like to transfer the business phone number from Eircom to the new UPC account and I'd also like to add a second telephone line with a seperate number as a house phone. Possible with UPC? Extra monthly cost?

I assume the contract will be for 12 months? If I want to change to another provider after the minimum contract period is there a penalty to terminate?

Was thinking about switching to a Freesat satelite system for the TV and Wimax for BB but having read the Wimax thread I've decided to give it a wide berth as it dosen't seem to compare at all well with UPC fibre based BB. My kids use xBox live and P2P type sites + we use Skype, YouTube and similar quite a bit so a good big and consistent BB service is the key. Am I making the correct decision?

    Any help/steer much appreicated.

    Ben

You'd really have to speak to UPC's sales people about the exact details of this but, as far as I am aware there is no difference between a small home office eircom business line and a residential line. The major difference used to simply be that they could invoice in a business name and you were listed in the business section of the phonebook.

You might have complications if the account is not in your name, e.g. if it's a business name.

If you're concerned, ask eircom to switch you back to being a residential line before you change over. I'm sure it's only a matter of asking.

UPC's phone service is completely separate from eircom, so you don't need to cease your eircom phone service immediately. The two lines can work simultaneously.

Once you're happy with the UPC service, you can put in a port request and get your number switched over. This will also automatically cease your existing eircom line.

I moved a line over to blueface, a VoIP operator, and it took about 10 days.

The only complication that you could possibly have is if you are subject to some kind of minimum term with eircom, or whoever provides your existing phone service e.g. a 12 month contract.
