What gels do you use for the long runs leading up to the marathon? I've tried Power gels but find them too sticky! I looked for other ones on the net but they're sold in boxes. I only need three or four!Where can they be bought in Galway, apart from Evergreen?

You do take them with water, right? I use Sports in Science Isotonic gels. they're far less sticky. You can buy them individually from Sub4.ie

You might have a look at the High5 Isogel. You can take them without water.

or jelly babies! don't knock them - less messy than gels and for most people don't cause digestion issues.

Try Nigel's Cycles, on the Tuam Rd. I'm pretty sure he carries the Hi5 gels.

I'm currently using the High5's which I buy in bulk from Wiggle and mainly started using them because they were the brand being given out during DCM a couple of years ago so wanted to stick with the same type. I might be giving those SiS isotonic ones from sub4 a try next time though if I'm feeling adventurous.

I tried the Hi5 isotonic gels, and thought they tasted horrid. But I have seen the same kind of feedback in relation to the SIS Isotonic gels, so it comes down to one's own personal taste. :)

Holland and Barrett in town have them. I've tried them before and they're easy on the stomach. Cheap too! They're called Maxim sports nutrition and are strawberry flavour.

Do they still give out gels? Still the same brand? Or is that something we won't find out until closer to the marathon?

They gave out Hi5 gels in DCM09. So they probably will be there again this year.

+1 on the High 5's , the isogel is good but still a little thick to be taken wihtout water . I would shop around in Galway , I bought 6 @1.60 or 1:80 yesterday in Nigels on Tuam road and seen them later in Kearneys bike shop on the headford rd for 1:30 each , I think the box was €18 - not sure how many are in them .

I use the SIS ones, they don't need water which is great and the orange one's don't taste too strong. I get mine from wiggle.

I use enervit ones, lemon flavour is pretty nice and tart. I've also used dates pre-race as a natural alternative.

As mentioned, still a little thick and gloopy to take without water :(

They gave out both normal AND Isogels, I only took two Isogels from them at the turn-off for Tempelogue they MIGHT give them out again this year, would be nice if they did but it'll probably depend on the finances they have reserved.

If going for the High5 ones, the mixed berry flavour were nicest I thought:)

how do people recommend carrying them, in a marathon, where 6or7 gels might be required.....how can you bring that many in your hand???

Anywhere! Gel belt, pockets of your shorts, pinned to your shorts, under your watch, under your hat...

I don't think you can carry them in your hand really. I've used a money belt to carry 5 or 6 gels, and while it's a pain in the early stages to have the thing bouncing around, at least towards the end, when you're suffering the most, you don't notice it, because they're mostly gone

    Hi;

Here is what i did for Dublin and worked for me.

I prefer the luzoade sport gels you get in boots for 1.80 each.

I used a gel arm band and that did the trick, it holds four and you should need no more.

I find that the SIS and H5 gels are very long...I found a link before about pinning the gels to the outside of your shorts and have them folded over the waistband and tucked inside your shorts...but with the longer gels I'm thinking this will irritate the area "inside your shorts".....this option might work the powerbar gels as they are shorter, therefore less of the gel pack would be inside your shorts....
anyway, I have a 10mile race at the weekend and will try it out then after giving it a go during one of my easy runs this week....
