Underwear

Can anyone recommend what sort of underwear is best for running please? I'm a novice and have been running now for about 5 weeks. I'm male, 6ft & 12 stone so I'm not overweight. Despite that I've found that I get a bit of chaffing on my inner thigh. Will proper underwear help with this? I have been using vaseline to help, but it still causes a bit of chaffing.

I'm hoping this is not deemed a medical question. I'm not looking for medical advice, I'm just wondering if proper underwear will help?

    Thanks

Commando is the only way to go! Try a different pair of shorts, or else get some bodyglide.

Great. Thanks for that. Where can Bodyglide be bought in Dublin?

Well that all depends on just how serious the chaffing is??

Seriously though, I tend to agree with Krusty. If you've got those loose running shorts they tend to have like an onion bag type netting inside them - does the job grand. If you wear cycling/lycra shorts, I find these fine on their own. If you have any other type of shorts, either consider changing them or else wear lycra shorts underneath them - nothing too heavy.

Just make sure that your lycra shorts are good and strong. A good firm pair and you shouldn't really need Bodyglide / Vaseline. A loose pair with dodgy stitching and you'll find out quick enough what this 'threading' craze is all about .

I was in exactly your situation when I started running a couple of years ago.

A combination of either underarmour shorts or Lidi (or was it Aldi?) base layer shorts and the judicious application of some bodyglide worked for me.

You can definitely get bodyglide in CycleSuperstore, Hollingworth Cycles and Wheelworx. You'd probably also get it in the likes of Elvery's, etc.

I wear lycra shorts aswell some times under normal shorts.

    Commando is cheaper. :)

Whatever you do don't wear cotton underwear. I made that mistake once on a 7 hour hike in very hot weather, I was walking like John Wayne for 2 days.

I use underarmor all the time now for running or hiking and find that I have no chaffing issues whatsoever.

I used to wear boxer briefs, and found them fine, till I started upping my distance.. then the chafing started.

I tried a few different types of undershorts,.. by big name brands.
Best I've found so far is actually a pair I bought in Penny's. Think the Pennys sports underwear brand is called Backswing. I'm going to pick up some more soon if I can find them again. I haven't had any chafing since using them.

I have the same problem Any underarmour type shorts do the job for me. Just make sure there's no baggyness in them. TK Maxx often have them on special offer if you keep an eye out.

Got the Under Armour shorts today and went for a run. They worked a treat. Thanks very much to everyone for the advice.

Commando and vaseline! But vaseline does destroy shorts!

Make sure you wash your hands after it though:D
