    Hi all,

I am doing my first Duathlon on Sunday in Mullingar and slighly bricking it. I have never done a race of any sort so it will all be a whole new experience.

What I was wondering is about food and drink on the morning of the race. Race is at 10AM. I will have porridge with Bananas and Honey and will do this as per norm around 7:30AM. But should I have some Isotonic drinks during the intervening hours before the race?

Also, during the race are these Isotonic drinks better than water?

    My opinion only...

Don't eat anything after 2 hours to start, nothing worse than feeling like getting sick during a race. Sip some drink from then until the start, but not too much. During the race you probably won't need liquids, but have a bottle on the bike just incase... for 20k I would have maybe 200ml in a bottle.

This works for me, I find that too much liquid is worse than too little.

+ 1 on the 2 hour thing & sipping liquid
Remember to go to the toilet as close to the star tof the race as you can, especially as it's your first.
I found the first couple duathlons I done I suffered cramp on the second run - drinking lots of water on the bike helped, but maybe you're coming from a better fitness base.
Don't bother with energy drink on the bike - water only.
Whilst you won't actually need an energy drink beforehand, it does no harm and can help get the head right for your first race, so sip slowly.
And for the love of God, please don't try mixing 3 banana's with a jumbo bottle of lucozade sport in the final 45 mins before - I done this and it's not good.

Don't forget to let us know how you got on.

Good advice above. During the race, Don't try anything that you haven't tried in training! Water would be the only exception. I find that some form of electrolyte tablet (I use Nuun currently) in the water helps with hydration and avoiding cramps.

PS don't be bricking it, just do your best and you can't be faulted for that and you will feel great whenit's finished, having done your best. It will be finished before you know it too, have a good one.

So plently of water the day before, and sip away during the morning.

So did the Jealus Wall Duathlon in Mullingar yesterday. Main thing was I finished it in just under 90 mins, which i was very please with.
The run was really tough on trails and with four climbs which were indeed Heartbreaking!!!
But the day was a great experience. The advice was well heeded and no cramping or dehydration issues.
Have to say that it was very well run event and will look at doing the CK Tri there later in the year.
    Again, cheers to everyone.
