Maybe I dont have a clue what Im on about but have asked alot of people this very question and they just couldnt answer it.

Sure the Seanad would be empty if we didn't have all of them.

Have to give those government cars to someone as well, can't just have them lying around.

Not to mention the planes and expense accounts.

Well, for a lot that I do know that are local politicians they have to put up with a ridiculous amount of red tape before they can get anything done.

In my hometown, the rich folk who run the local Super-Valu / Hotel / nite-club actually have more say than the local TD's.

Tesco was recently boycotted thanks to this lovely bunch of Town's Trust, despite the local TD's pushing for Tesco to be brought in. They're not the 1st major business to have been run out of town, either!

Because everybody seems to want a name to vote for, that is, somebody who fixed my pothole, got a medical card etc. etc. to vote for.

If there where less TD's we'd still do this, but on a less parochial level.

I'd actually like to know the historical basis for it myself. I've a feeling they looked around in 21 and 37 and counted up how many people they really liked and hence arrived at the numbers for the Dail and Seanad.

Plus to add on that note of local TD's, for years & years many where elected because they were well-known around the area despite having done next to nothing.

I don't count events for the local G.A.A. or football club to be beneficiary to me or especially the teenagers who pretty much have nothing to do except drink.

A good example was when the bunch of local TD's partitioned to have the prison installed in my town..............fast forward a few years where crime has risen thanks to released prisoners / relocated families living in new estates that had too many houses built during the boom and said TD's are now "against" the prison.......thanks alot, you pricks!

    ?????

Less TD's would mean better Govt., I think! ;)

Just looking at Donegal, 6 TD's, could be 5 no bother, probably even 3.

Personally, I vote for one politician in my area because he is around at my house on numerous occasions during the year,
just to ask if there is anything he can do for us.
He goes around to every house in the area asking if there is anything he can do for people.

This guy is really high up (really high) in one of the opposing parties.

    I'll always vote for him.
He is smart and he actually cares about his constituents.
There is another independent TD who always organises stuff and attends meetings in the constituency,
but other than that the politicians are only seen when they want something from you, ie votes.

    Here ya go...have a pen,ooo...and a badge.

    Ehhh...thanks...

Why is there the Seanad and what does it do?
IMO it is useless and a waste of money!!

As a matter of fact, one of the main problems in this country is that (comparatively) unimportant local issues are given greater precedence over pressing national ones.
