    Never liked the two piece seat on the repro Raleigh Chopper, the original had a banana seat.

    I had one of the all in one seats on the one I had. Legend of a bike.

    I also saw him recently on Griffith Ave with a "new" bike - that looked like a tandem but wasn't. The front part had a saddle and handlebars, but no pedals!!

    The you lady (daughter? grand daughter?) seemed to be having a great time. Didn't have time to get a pic though.

    Why did they stop it? I heard it was over H&S BS issues, ie the temptation for kids carrying passengers.

    The Wikipedia entry would suggest so. I had heard that the gear lever was a bit too likely to cause injury too.
    Handling and Safety Issues

    The original Chopper is fondly remembered, though it was not without problems — it was less stable than a conventional bike, and trickier to ride. It was slow and heavy, the wide tyres creating significant rolling resistance; the Chopper was not suitable for long distances. At moderate speeds it suffered speed wobbles.[11] After several reported accidents, it was attacked in the press as a dangerous toy. The long seat lent itself to giving lifts to others,[12] and accidents were not uncommon. It could perform involuntary wheelies readily, again a frequent cause of accidents. The gear lever was also positioned to cause injury in a crash.
