What to Look For Buying an iPhone privately

I'm thinking of buying an iPhone 3GS 16 GB which was given by Vodafone as a contract upgrade. Without any previous iPhone experience please tell me what to look out for?

How do I know if iPhone has ever been used?
Is it possible to do a factory re-set?
Does it matter if previously, the iPhone has / hasn't been connected to iTunes?
Will the iPhone be locked to Vodafone and if so will there be any official / legitimate way of removing the sim lock?

A good starting point is which carrier do you want to use it with ?

I'll be using on Vodafone bill pay (I cannot get one myself because my existing contract runs until November) However when abroad I would like to use with a foreign SIM.

theres no way to use one from voda with a foreign sim yet, if it was bought from ios i think they were all unlocked, ya could prob find an o2 one that was unlocked recently

The iPhone is supposed to be brand new and unused. How do I verify this?

It doesn't really matter if it has, one sync with your iTunes will wipe most of it.
