A little digression from my normal questions but does your club let you know if the course is closed or send you general text messages about events, bar-restaraunt offers etc..and if so; does anyone know who they use for bulk texting?

I've never got a text saying course was closed (which it has been) but I get a text on most other things, think its 3Mobile

My own club uses it and i find it excellent, particularly during the winter we've just had.

3 had an offer a while back wherby clubs could avail of it for free.

3 bring out free text service for clubs
MOBILE network 3 has announced a free texting service for golf clubs and their members.
Sponsors of the 3 Irish Open, the Irish Mixed Foursomes, Irish Ladies Open Strokeplay and the Irish Colleges Golf Association, 3 is making a free news and information text service available to every golf club in the country.
“3golf text” is a free SMS service to all golf clubs signed up to 3Business. Using it, a club can keep all of their members up-to-date on the latest club news, competition results, course closed notices, re-scheduled meetings/agms etc.
The service also allows groups to be created which will allow the clubs to contact particular members, committees or those involved in administration.
As 3golf text is internet-based, no software needs to be downloaded so it’s ready for immediate use. For more information, check out www.3golf.ie
John McHenry , golf consultant at 3, said: “We at 3 want to ensure that our extensive golf sponsorship portfolio should allow Irish golfers an opportunity to share in the technology we have to offer. Free real time information on club activities can now be a reality.
“We believe that by offering 3golf text exclusively to golf clubs we are recognising and supporting the importance of the club in this great game.”

Yes, it is possible. We don't have it (but we will if I can find out how...thanks to Mister Sifter). It's the most immediate form of communication and even old ladies have mobiles these day (sorry Mother!). We've been quoted 5.5c per text based on 800 but surely in this day a age of technology that is fairly unrealistic.

Thanks Licksy, how did the last year's Barton boys do against Wexford?

I've set this up for 2 clubs recently, I used messenger pro with clickatell. Imported contacts from Outlook or csv file. Clubs use it to send reminders for comp's etc

    What costs are involved?
3 contacted me and said if the club changes all their phone over we get FREE SMS for an 'opy-in' service and they send about 1 ad a month.

    3.2 cent per message

Why not set up a new phone line and get the head green keeper to record a message saying the date and whether the course is open/closed. Circulate the number to all the members, if the weather looks bleak they call the number and get the recorded message.

this is what happens at our club. You really shouldn't have to spoonfeed members as to whether the course is open or not!

    fairly sensible that,

The text messaging should be used more for promoting a business.
why spend 3 or 5c per text if you are promoting your course to be closed, therefore making a loss.

better to promote competitions, or offers, and get some good advertisment out of the texting.

True; we have a system whereby if the course is closed members know that they can phone up and access a recorded message. That was really only an example....it's more the promotional side of the club e.g. food/bar/support your team/general info...

www.sendmode.com do it for between 2.5 and 3.0c on a pay as you go basis, no other charges. AND they're Irish, based in Letterkenny

i have used sendmode for over a year now following a free trial for my soccer club in Derry and have had no problems and are cheap as chips.

Same with NeonSMS - great crowd, good advice and reliable - To be fair we are lucky to have such quality Iirsh providers- aint always about the price

so many uses for sms- Its a good tool if correctly used. I agree with Conor J comments above - lots of uses as well as open/close times.

sometimes it's about providing your members with quality information and not all about promotions.

Sendmode's customer service is second to none - you want something done they'll do it that day. Pure class.

    Anything else to contribute guys?
The 3 mobile offer mentioned above is the obvious choice, it being free and all.

Sounded good to me also but the powers that be wouldn't bother their proverbial to change over. 'To much hassle' and 'better to stick with the service provider your know' and all that *&^%.

Went with teamer but the first message was gobbledygook, our message mixed with something about a Rugby match somewhere. Confused the members so I haven't used it since.

Our club has the status online on the brs booking page for the day.

This time of year there will be updates like "open but no Buggies Allowed" or when its frozen over night might say something like "Closed, Inspection at 10.00"
