eircom wireless router media server problems connecting to PS3

    hi,
i'm try to get the my ps3 to connect to my laptops media server but it won't. i know its the wireless modem because when i plug a netgear wireless router i have into one of the outputs from the eircom wireless modem box i can get it to work, but its a very messy system and i just want to be able to use the eircom box. it has a NAT 2 connection so there should be no problem with signal. i think it might be something to do with a firewall on the eircom box so i disabled it by connecting to the ip of the modem and it still didn't work. the eircom box i have is new, not the netopia one that everyone seems to have. its a ZyXEL communications corporation P-660HW-T1 v.3 . has anyone had this problem and had a fix for it? its driving me absolutely nuts so it is!
    thanks in advance

Probably need a little more info on your setup... (how is everything connected, and ip address of PS3/laptop when it works and when it doesn't)

FWIW, here's some things to check...

First off - you say NAT2 so sounds like your connected to the box with an internal IP which is good. Many have connected their PS3s over PPPoE to eircom boxes which gets an external IP and prevents that. So assuming this is the case we can rule it out.

Next up, you don't mention which media server. There are quite a few ;) Am going to assume it's the Windows 7 Media Server. (since it works with the netgear box am assuming it's a compatible media server anyways)
That, and many others, use the UPNP AV to broadcast and discover. Check that you have this enabled on the eircom router. It could be that it's not a feature, or it's disabled by default.

Do you have your PS3 in a DMZ on the router? Sometimes the firewalls then prevent things like upnp working over such an internal connection as it's a possible security threat.

Finally not sure what you mean by connecting to the modems IP. Are you in effect connecting one or more machines to the external IP network, this would then make the connection fail.

I'm using Windows XP and WMP11 as the media server. I've disabled the firewall on the router and the laptop to try and see was that the problem but to no avail. I'm been messing around with the setting in the UPnP section on the box and and I've enabled it for all eg WAN LAN. still it doesn't show up on in the PS3, it has to be a setting on the eircom box because the netgear worked perfectly, without changing the firewall on my laptop.
I rang eircom but you know how good they were:rolleyes:

Same thing as the win 7 media server

Agree with you.. something in the Zyxel
I did a quick google and found quite a few posts which have similar problems. Seems it may be a firmware issue, and seems to be related to finding the media server over wifi.

Try turning the router off and then back on, I have the same (or similar) router to you, doing this seems to fix UPNP for me.

Pretty sure this is the right thread. My windows media player 12 can't find my ps3 as a device. As a consequence I can't use wmp 12, tversity, ps3 media server. I have upnp and nat 2 enabled. Using the same zyxel eircom router. I've followed all the walkthroughs online and I am certain that I have done everything right in order for my laptop to recognise my ps3. I am using the windows firewall and avast anti virus. But I have the firewall accepting all relevant programs. Even tried disabling but nothing. Worked a treat on my old xp laptop. But with windows 7 and wmp 12 it just won't find the ps3. Could well be the zyxel router too but I can find nat 2 no probs and upnp is enabled too. Any suggestions? I fear its the router.

Not sure it helps but I was having lots of problems connecting my PS3 to my Linksys. I disabled upnp in the router homepage and no problems since then.

    Hi Guys,
    Any update on this?
I've just received my Zyxel router from eircom and now I can't share my media to my PS3 using either Media Player or PS3 Media Server.

I've had it with the zyxel. Drops every couple of hours. Another piece of crap from Eircom. Investing in a top of the range N router. I hear good things about the d-link DIR-655. Might opt for that.

    have you tried Orb ?

    http://www.orb.com/

It works from a laptop to a ps3... just leave it in the system tray

Your firewall on the router needs to be on low before you can open ports through NAT
