OK I had trouble with this before and fixed it somehow, buit I had to reinstall windows and now I cannot get my mac back on the network. It's a standard xp network, the workgroup is called MSHOME and I have a few folders shared so I can share files and stream movies etc.

How do I do this on a mac?

I tried going into system preferences, network, airport>advanced, WINS - and added my workgroup there.

I also tried going into Applications, utilities, Directory Utility. Type: "smb://192.168.1.14" - but it just says "unable to add server"

I'm lost as to what to do now I've googled it and find several different apparent ways none which work.

I just want my XP-PC to show up in the Finder so I can browse shared network files. Can anyone help please?

I'm not sure why your server isn't just appearing in Finder, under the "Shared" section - I have a Windows Home Server on my network and my wife uses a Windows 7 laptop, both of which just show up in Finder without any settings being tweaked in Mac OS X...

Try adding the server from Finder - "Go" menu => Connect to Server, enter smb://ServerName/ShareName/ (in my experience, you are better off using the IP instead of the WINS name of the server for "ServerName" as you seem to be doing anyway). If that connects, it'll prompt you for a valid username and password for the share - have your keychain remember them in the future and the share should appear in Finder from that point on (or you could create a direct alias to it).

If sharing is setup correctly on the server and router all you need to do is

(FINDER MENU) GO > CONNECT TO SERVER > (Enter address smb://192.168.1.14 and login credentials)

A shortcut is also COMMAND + K to add server from finder.
