What's your happy?

I recently finished an evening course and it's reminded me where a big part of my happiness comes from. It showed me that I need to put more time into the things I want for myself, but more importantly I really enjoyed doing it. I sometimes think we get so bogged down in the nitty gritty of life that we forget about the small things that make us smile.

What part of your life gives you a fuzzy rush? Where do you find your joy? What little things about your day-to-day give you pleasure?

If it's the little things that matter, then what little things make you smile?

Going for really long walks in the woods/national park/beach/wherever. When I'm at home in Killarney I go for a long walk most days. Like getting some air.

Spending a lazy sunday in bed with the missus, window open so all you can hear is the distant traffic whooshing by, sleeping in , cuddling, watching tv, chatting all day, the thoughts of her calling over saturday nights are what gets me through the week sometimes.

I love nothing more than cuddling up in the evenings in my pyjamas with a book. I get great pleasure from reading and writing. It's my escapism from reality which may also be the reason why I tend to read Fantasy/Horror/Paranormal books.

I also love that period in the day when himself and I will just sit down and have a chat. Our time. We're so busy these days finishing up our degrees, that those little half hour chats are bliss. :p

Rain lashing against the window when the house is warm and theres a roast in the oven.
Rainy Sundays reading the papers with candles lit and NO radios or TVs switched.

That first blast of "just about summer" sun after months of cold weather.

Those really good chats with the OH that just flow really well and make me feel all happy.

Having a girly (gossipy, ahem :o) chat with a friend over a lovely cup of coffee.

Settling down on the couch to watch a DVD boxset of something good with nyommy munchies.

The feeling of freedom after exams are over.

Planning a sunshine (or any) holiday. And, of course, going on that holiday.

Things have been pretty crap for me for a while now (relationship break up, work hassle etc) so my happy at the moment come from doing 3 exercise classes back to back at the gym and getting massive high from that. Am also too wrecked to think by the time I get home so thats good too.
In a calmer sense all through the crap my family have been great but the happy comes in the form of my nieces and nephews who are great. In particular my 3 year old niece who shoots from the hip but is funny, cute, adorable and loves me lots. Can't beat a cuddle from her while watching a another Disney princess movie.

I tutor adults with literacy issues and when one of my students makes a breakthrough, I get a massive kick. I love that quiet time between midnight and 3 when I do most of my studying - and I love weekend mornings when the kids sneak into bed with us and we all doze and chat.

These days it's leaving the house in the morning and there's that slight chill in the air, but you know by lunchtime it'll be nice and spring-sunny and warm enough to go for a really pleasant walk with that fresh, lush, green-growy smell you don't get at any other time of the year. :)

    Nice topic :-)
For me it mostly comes from my partner. Seeing him after work, waking up and going to sleep with him....

But also from our pet, from being outside in nature on a good day, from seeing and working on beautiful art, from nice food and drink, from certain songs and films...

    - Seeing my boyfriend smile
    - The satisfaction I get after throughly cleaning my house and sitting down with a coffee and a cig to revel in my epic cleanliness (happens about once a year  )
    - Reading
    - Writing something, reading back over it and thinking 'Yes, thats perfect'
    - Practicing the guitar and my OH saying 'You're picking this up really quickly'
    - Seeing my family
    - Playing some basketball
    - Being on stage (nothing can compare to that feeling for me)

    - clean, crisp duvet covers, shower and clean pj's
    - when my baby gets in to bed with me in the morning and tells me he 'lubs' me
    - walking my dog especially nice walks in the woods or beach with OH and the nippers
    - cuddles
    - having a really good laugh with friends (you know the kind when tears roll down your face and your sides hurt)
    - sitting out the back with a lovely cold glass of wine on a Summer evening
    - holding hands
    - falling asleep in my OHs lap when we watch a dvd
    - the train in and out to work, its my quiet time where I can read, listen to music or just look out the window
    - a smoochy text (still makes my insides turn over after 5 years)
    - a really good book
    - a song that brings back a good memory (usually cheesy dodgy songs that remind me of birthdays or holidays but my friends 'get' it). Loveshack by the B52s is one such song and always guarantees lolz

I'm really liking this thread, thank you to Elphaba for reviving it. :D

It really is always the little things in life that make you the happiest, it's definitely the case for me. So here are some things that make me happy.

    - My bf - just everything about him - seeing him smile at me, having him hug me and kiss me, also getting cute texts from him and really all of the other little things he does that make me feel so special. Watching him with his little niece and nephew is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen, he's fantastic with them. :D

    - Stepping off the bus and seeing my bf after not seeing him for a couple of weeks, and then getting hugs and kisses as mentioned above. :P

    - Seeing animals do funny things and not being able to stop giggling at them. Never fails to cheer me up if I'm in a bit of bad mood.

    - Baby animals. Doesn't matter what it is, it could be a crocodile. But if it's a baby one it's automatically adorable!

    - A good DVD, popcorn and bed.

    - Having an animal leave the vets in perfect health knowing that you're made a difference just by doing your job (I'm a veterinary nurse). Unfortunately this hasn't happened in a while, I can't seem to find a job, just finding it so difficult.

    - Hearing babies laughing.

    - Waking up to texts, especially from bf.

    - Funny things that kids say. :D

    - Falling into bed after a really long day.

    - Sleeping on the bus/train. I always have to set alarms just in case I miss my stop! :o

    - Getting completely lost in a good book, something I haven't really done in a while unfortunately.

    - Getting my hair done.

What is currently making me happy:

-finally making the decision at 34 to go to college to get the degree I never gave myself the chance at when I was 18

-watching my kids grow up into fine decent people (most times) and feeling I and my husband had a hand in that somehow

-knowing that in a few years I will hopefully (fingers crossed) be able to bring a few more bob into the house as it is the only thing that is currently missing in our otherwise happy little homestead:)

-what makes me very happy is seeing the amount of friends and family who have had faith in my ability to complete my degree even when I seriously doubted myself.......Thanks guys. couldn't have done it without that support:)

    I get the fuzzies

-Every time my dog comes into the room. Just love him to bits :D
-Watching old tv theme songs on Youtube. Reminds me of happy childhood times
-Napping on the couch by the fire in the winter
-Having a cuddle and a chat with my sister in one of our beds. Maybe too old for that but we don't care :p
-Giving presents. If I see something that I think someone I love will like, I have to get it for them!
-Dancing. I live for dancing on nights out!
-Everything about my boyfriend. When he texts me good morning every day, when he tells me how much he likes and how much he misses me and gives me compliments all the time, when he wants to talk about my problems and help me out, when we're together and he sneakily pinches my bum in public, video game contests, when we snuggle up for a movie and I always fall asleep on him :)

    Singing
Conversing with inquisitve little kids (doing a childcare course, not being creepy!)
That almost awkward moment when I get off the bus and see my boyfriend waiting for me
When my boyfriend does some small cute gesture, even if its just putting his hand on my shoulder when he walks past me
When I see my best guy friend, which isn't half often enough, he always gives me a huge hug and I don't hug much so its lovely
Catching up with my best friend on our "date night" when we cruise the town and talk about how unreal we are :pac: (in joke)
    Oh, and in jokes :D
Going for a family dinner and skitting with the brothers while my mother looks mortified and my father tries not to laugh with us :D

    - My girlfriend thanking me when I laugh at her bad jokes*

I'm at my happiest when I'm....

Acting the gombeen and making my friends laugh and being made laugh. I know some hilarious people.

That Friday feeling. Friday morning my weekends begin. I go food shopping and go for a coffee early in the morning to read.

Early mornings generally and getting up that little bit earlier to enjoy breakie, my favourite meal of the day. Porridge with honey and toasted almonds, freshly squeezed orange juice and a cup of tea with Barry's teabags sent over from Ireland by my dad.

Don't mean to rub it in but I live in Spain and the weather is heating up.....long, long walks with good music in my ear, feeling the sun on my face and checking out the local talent ;-)

When all my family are back on the old sod for a visit...there's 7 of us and 3 of us are living abroad...it happens so rarely that we're all home at the same time but when we are, I get the serious fuzzies. We get along fantastically now and have such a laugh. I wouldn't swap any of them for the world.

Dancing to great music and being tipsy enough to believe I'm stealing the dancefloor with my funky moves.

Long, long kisses with a good kisser.

Receiving genuine compliments about things I never thought were true.

Doing a good turn for someone who didn't expect it...helping someone with their pram or their luggage on stairs, helping an old woman with her shopping, giving my seat up to someone else. It's nice to be nice.

Eating tasty grub and convincing myself it won't affect me because it's the weekend.

Getting paid. I feel proud of myself that I came here on my own knowing nobody and not really knowing what I was doing and now I'm getting by doing something I enjoy.

Travelling. I like everywhere I go. I've no expectations of any place, so I'm never disappointed.

Spanish children. I want one. Cute as buttons the lot of them!

I could go on all day...so many things make me happy. I'm pretty content overall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,331 ✭✭✭✭bronte

The smell of freshly cut grass or turfsmoke.....reminds me of running around half wild in the countryside in Donegal when I was a kid.

When I'm back to Ireland for a visit I love waking up in my bed in my bedroom.

When my cat wakes me up in the morning by jumping on my chest and purring til I pay attention to her.

    Scorsese marathons.

    Sunday mornings in bed.

I love when my mum comes over to London to visit.

    Reading...I'm a total bookworm.

Long walks and getting completely lost on the local heath. I find it impossible to be in a bad mood there.

My Bf's ability to make me laugh with just a look.

Watching scary movies in the dark with him.

I love being near the ocean it totally relaxes me...typical piscean!

Foreign holidays ...I love exploring and going out in the evenings.

Oh and the freshly showered/fresh bedlinen thing...mmmm.
