If an injury is preventing you from running go see a professional, end of story. The short term cost will be worth it in the long run...

got meself a pair of these puppies last august in Amphibian king after a gait test - Mizuno Wave Riders 12

have covered about 470 miles plus since then - absolutely no problems with them at all but the last few runs over the last few weeks i've been feeling an ever so slight twinge in my right calf muscle.

i'm thinking this is a sign to get myself a new pair - what kind of mileage do people get out of their runners? I'm about 6foot2 - 14 stone

the runners themselves don't look like they are in bad nick - the threads are worn a bit but other than that it doesn't feel too flat.

what kind of signs do people look out for that it's time to get yourself a new pair of runners?

The best thing to do is to compare them with a pair of new runners (tricky, I know!). See how much sponginess there is in the base of the shoe, and compare it with a new pair. Being a heavier runner (like myself) you wont get quite as much mileage out of a pair of show, so they could well be on the way out. I was wearing Mizuno waverider 12's, and bought the same size in the Waverider 13s and they were a perfect fit. Wiggle.co.uk sells them at a competitive price, and I'm sure Amphibian King would give you a discount (in fact you could bring your old shoes in to them and ask them if they're worn out).

cheers Krusty - some great advice there - I'll drop out to the lads and see what they think - glad to hear the 13's are good too - they're a bloody good shoe

actually just realised I completely hijacked someone else's thread - sorry @Dundalk!

I disagree - quite a few "professionals" are as professsional as well something thats not very.

I would be keen to see people to allowed describe their injuries and look for recommendations of actual competent therapists that have experience in treating these injuries and come recommended. Discussion on how to treat injuries themselves should be kept to out of band means.

''Wear orthotics and do core exercises'' are not an apprproaite treatment for all sports injuries. The standard of sports physio varies hugely, allowing people to mention professionals who have helped them with specifc types injuries would be useful.

Google "Runner's World" AND injuries and you'll get dozens of articles and advice on how to prevent injuries, what may be causing them and what to do when injured.

    I find them very helpful.

Every injury does not require professional attention. Although, it may take a professional to tell you to rest for six weeks before you actually do

I'm sure a question like "I think I have X injury, who should I go see?" is perfectly OK. The types of questions that would not be OK are "I think I have X injury, how do I fix it?".

The likes of getting gait analysis done and fitted with an appropriate pair of shoes would come under injury prevention and should also be OK, it's injury cure that shouldn't be discussed.

Just a matter of interest why arent people allowed to discuss injuries?

It's medical advice that cannot be given, discussing injuries isn't a problem.

People knowing when they cross that line between the two may be a problem though.

I'd expect this to be stomped on:
Or as I sprained my ankle last night, any one any good strengthening exercises???

    But this to be OK:
Any one any good ankle strengthening exercises???

For mild aches and pains, there are generic pieces of advice that everyone can pass on. "Put ice on it" or "try a roller" can help a mild problem, and isn't going to do any harm.

But if you have a more serious pain - something that doesn't go away after a couple of days rest, or will stop you in mid-run - why on earth would you want a diagnosis from the internet anyway? A good doctor/physio would want to see you in person and find out exactly where and when the pain is, rather than rely on your emailed description. Random people with no medical training, going off a two-line description, could do more harm than good.

Without going into to much detail i have a problem with my foot since last October, ive been to the physio a hundred times and have recently seen an orthopedic doctor. My leg is now in cast and will be for the next few weeks but it still dosent seem to be getting any better and I wanted to see if I could talk to someone who might have had a similar problem to see how they faired with it

You need to get help from someone that's got experience dealing with people who engage in sports.
A tale from'83, so probably safe enough to mention here: I developed a painful knee while training for the marathon. GP sent me to an orthopedic specialist, and when I asked if I could run on it the reply was "if it hurts you can't run on it". Dissatisfied, I got the GP to refer me to a physio who was used to dealing with runners and other sportspeople. This person asked me to bring my running shoes along to the consultation, and spent ages examining them and comparing them to each other, then spent a similar amount of time comparing my legs and taking all sort of measurements. At the end of the visit I was asked "does it hurt at the moment" and when I replied "no" the response was "well, the best thing to do is run on it, and call me if/when it starts to bother you".
Many medical people have no understanding of an athlete's mentality, let alone what is possible or advisable behaviour for an injured sportsperson. Also, recent medical advice is changing, and for example treatment for back trouble nowadays is very different to what it was even 10 years ago. Some people haven't caught up yet.
