Im considering a safari holiday in Masai Mara, Kenya.

Has anyone been on this kind of holiday? Wondering abuot the safety side & practicalities . The accomadation Im looking at is in the middle of the park in tent style camps. How safe is this? Also would be flying into Nairobi airport, how safe is this?

Admittedly Im completly ignorant of this place & the culture. Would love to hear some experiences.

Hi, we were in Kenya in June/July 2007 - family holiday, 5 adults and 5 children (10 and under). Due to group size and the fact that we had children with us, we decided to organise everything through Trailfinders here in Dublin, although it is very easy to organise the trip yourself.

Firstly, a holiday to Kenya is very expensive and in general, when you visit the Masai Mara, tented accommodation is more expensive than the lodges. A very very important point to note is to check where your accommodation is, because if your lodge/camp is on the outer perimeters of the Mara park you could have a long drive each morning/afternoon. Ideally somewhere near the Talek river is good, ie the Intrepids, The Goveners, Serena etc. Time of year is also important, high season is August, Sept and early October due to the Migration.

Nairobi is a bustling city and it is not recommended that you walk around after dark and certainly that you are careful during the day, ie no camera's around the neck or fancy jewellery etc - however a trip to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant orphanage is a must, if you 'adopt' an elephant you can return for a private meeting with your ele in the evening, up close and personal, and help settle it down for the night - a wonderful experience.

    Hope that helps a bit
