HP G60 - No Video on Boot but OK in Windows?

    Here's a strange one...

Shut down my HP G60 laptop as usual yesterday, but when I fired it back up late last night, the lights all came on, hard drive started working away etc but no video on the screen.

As an IT Manager I know this usually isn't a good sign for the panel, so to confirm it I hooked up an external monitor to the VGA port and sure enough, the desktop appeared on it.

But then when I disconnected the monitor, the display swithed back and the laptop screen worked again? Thinking it some odd external display switching issue, I restarted but again no picture on bootup - although if I wait till it gets to the login screen and close the lid on the laptop and reopen it (I have the power settings set so this has no effect), the screen comes to life again?

No matter what I do though I can't get it to have a picture on boot. I've reseated the memory, pulled the battery and "drained the capacitors" using HP's hard reset procedure - no effect, the only way to get a picture while it boots is to hook up an external display.

As it was bought in PC World, HP don't wanna know and the PC World tech (when I finally got through) was all to happy to diagnose it as a hardware fault and suggest I bring it in to the store to get it sent away for repair (2-3 weeks :() .. at least this happened before the warranty runs out in 3 weeks.

Anyone have any ideas, or seen anything like this as it makes no sense to me? No there was no dropping of the laptop or anything like that.. it just went between yesterday evening and last night.

    Cheers!
