Just to clear something up, I wanted to ask some people who might be a bit more knowledgeable in here: At about what distance can you hear an Average Helicopter?

Specifically Im talking about a modern Apache Longbow (...) But I just want to know objectively what the minimum distance you would need to hear it distinctly.

    Many different factors involved.

Weather, terrain, helicopter height, its speed, its direction of travel, etc.

Lets say average heli flys around at 2,000 ft. Maybe you would hear it 1-2 miles before it passes over you. Maybe even less depending on the helicopter design.

I would deduce you are thinking of 'that' video or similar. But to answer your question, it depends. When the original Garda helicopter, an Ecureuil hovered over your house at 2am you knew all about it. But the more recent EC135 is considerably quieter. The Apache is also known to be a quieter helicopter than many others, relatively speaking. Distance isn't the only factor, height also helps.

But I think it's fair to say the people featured in those gun camera shots were quite aware of the helicopters in the vicinity. What they couldn't know was whether or not they were being targeted. With Longbow they can be kept in sight even though the Apache could be facing away from the target and the helcopters could be quite a distance away.

Agree with the previous responses ... it is really a "how long is a piece of string" type question. There are a huge number and range of variables. But, my assumption is that Apache traffic over any incident in Iraq is frequent and persistant, and not "out of the ordinary", and most importantly, the victims had no reason to suspect that they were being targetted.

Thanks guys, just trying to discern facts and fiction. Whether they were aware or responding to the AH-64 was one of those factors.
