Ok, I wasn't sure where to put this, but here seemed best (how many threads start off like this? :P).

Anyway, if I was to have a computer shipped to me by a friend, how much Customs Duty would I need to pay?

Does it depend on weight/price, and is it a fixed amount/percentage?

    Cheers.

Ok so it cleared customs. Hopefully it will be here in the morning before I go to work. Dunno yet if there are any charges!

Received my iPad this morning, box was marked as having a value of $499 + $50 shipping. The total duty came to €93!

    Hope this helps!

    So ~22.5% duty?

Would that be the same for a much bigger import, or is it just based on the value of the items?

Thansk for the info though. :D

Everything imported from out side the EU gets 21.5% VAT added to it by customs, customs then usually add their own handling charge.

When I order stuff from outside the EU I always add 25% on to it so I know what I will owe customs in fees. Usually I have to pay these to UPS/TNT at the door.

You'll pay VAT at 21%, plus a handling fee of up to €15. You might have to pay import duty, but not normally, and the rates vary depending on the item. The Taric website is fairly crap, and being changed, but this is where you find the rates.

Wow, that website looks horrible. :p I'll go through it though.

If it's being sent a gift, would that change any of the duties?

From what I can gather they take the value ($499) plus postage ($50) and work out the vat from that. The value was declared on the box. If it's not they can hold it for a few days while they determine the value. There was also an an post handling fee of €6.

It will be sent as a gift though. From what I can find, gifts under €45 are expemt from VAT (from DHL's site). So would labelling it as a gift actually make a difference?
