I know a few people who say it's Sunday, but I think it should be Monday, since Sunday is part of the weekend

What day do you think is the first of the week?

    Monday of course.

    That's why everyone hates them

Honestly don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to sunday as the first day of the week.

    Especially in this country.

Sunday is the last day of drinking before a new week starts and you have to go back to work, ie. stop drinking..

According to religious tradition, Sunday is the first day of the week.

According to the International Standards Organisation it's Monday...

Even nursery rhymes know that it starts on a Monday
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

I picked Wednesday, just to be different.

Monday. Sure Sunday's in the weekend. Also didn't God rest on the 7th day, which is why Sunday is sacred? Or some other mumbo-jumbo shíte. He'd hardly take a rest from creating on the first day, would he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭Glenster

    It's Monday.

Just cos some old priest says it doesnt mean it's true, particularly if it's something like "God wants you to touch me"

I don't care what the official line is - it's Monday in my mind and my heart and it should be in everyone elses too. :p

No other day has that "here we go again" feel about it as much as Monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,758 ✭✭✭Stercus Accidit

Only some sort of joyless pedant would claim Sunday is the beginning of anything.

Which would actually be Friday/ Saturday then based on the Jewish calendar, just the Christian one got a bit out of sync.

But I was raised as a Christian, and Christianity is always right.

Seriously though, in all practical applications, Monday is the first day of the week.

    Monday.
For a start whats the point of having a day of rest at the start of a week - than the end of it!
We (most?) work all week and then have days of rest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

I'd say Monday personally. My working week is from Sunday to Saturday though so go figure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭TanG411

I always think Sunday because it's a lazy sort of day, and that makes a good start to a week.

Another poll that shows that the majority of AH'ers are wrong !!

Sunday is the first day of the week.

definately monday, isn't sunday the start in jewish terms and monday in christianinty, i.e. the day after the sabbath day starts the new week???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 294 ✭✭Caveat

When people loosely refer to 'some day next week' does anyone honestly ever think that they may be referring to a Sunday?

    Thought not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 644 ✭✭✭Jeanious

Sunday is the first day of the week.

How/why? I don't get how sunday could possibly be the start of the week (cf. previous comments about "weekEND")

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,555 ✭✭✭Gillington

Monday is the start of the week

Thursday is the start of the weekend!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,166 ✭✭✭enda1

Monday is the first day of the week.

Weekend is Saturday and Sunday (and maybe Friday evening).

"See ye next week" means see you on a day between Monday and Sunday week, not the coming Sunday!

The Sunday is the start crowd is just an imperial legacy. Lots of the English see it that way too. Talk to any continental and Monday is the start.

That doesn't really mean that Monday is the first day of the week, it just comes first in the poem. However it does mean that if you're born on Sunday you're a homosexual.

No, it depends on the locale.
For example in many Muslim countries; Sunday is a working day while they have Friday and Saturday off.
While in Isreal it would be first day of the week.
Just like how different countries use a comma or a dot as decimal separator.

However in most of the EU; Sunday is the last day of the week, as they follow the ISO week.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_week_date wiki does not lie ;)

It's been Sunday in the British Isles for a long, long time. Monday began to creep in as Outlook from Bill Gates starts the week with Monday.

you might want to get with the times ;)

And I dont think it was Bill Gates who decided that Monday was the start of the week.

Why does the Poll Start with Monday

Surely you should have mixed up the days to get a better result

    Wednesday *

    Sunday

    Tuesday

    Friday

    Monday

    Saturday

    Thursday

    * This does not mean I think the week Starts with Wednesday

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Those that claim Sunday is the start of the week are wrong otherwise why would Sunday be part of the week-end?

It has to be Monday as it is the first day following the week-end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,893 ✭✭✭Davidius

    Sunday, because SMTWTFS looks better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,975 ✭✭✭Greyfox

Sunday is the first day of the week.

So your saying sunday is not part of the weekend? Next you'll be saying cats and doge are the same thing! Of course monday is the first day of the week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

Ok, I've done about 5 minutes of researching here. Apparently Sunday was historically the first day of the week

    Sunday

But across Europe these days Monday is considered the first day of the week. The name Monday actually means 'First Day'.

    Monday

It depends on what religion you are too seemingly so you can pretty much decide whichever day you want to be the first. So.... Wednesday, I choose you!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

It depends on ones cultural/religious background (Calenders/Diaries published in parts of the middle east start the week on Friday and start the year on March 21st for example)

Christians are divided on the issue. Contempary Catholics and some Protestants reckon its Sunday but others reckon Monday or even Saturday

Secularist Westerners generally go for Atari Jaguar but if pressed on the issue will say Monday

The ISO say Monday (Well before Bill Gates)

Anyone know where FSM stands on the matter ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭Sofaspud

    It's obviously monday!

    Monday - One day
    Tuesday - Two's day
    Wednesday - When's that day?
    Thursday - Third day

    And so on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭Glenster

i used to be sure that monday was the start of the week too (oh the ignorance of youth).

then my eyes were opened. then i saw the light.

    Sunday, Monday, Happy Days.
    Tuesday, Wednesday, Happy Days.
    Thursday, Friday, Happy Days.
The Weekend comes, my cycle hums,
    Ready to race to you.

I work sunday to wednesday so that would suggest I should say sunday.

But nothing ever gets done on a sunday as most people are hungover for most of the day - Ill stick with my original Monday idea
