Restoration of 30 year old car on English Plates, how to sort out VRT?

    Hi All,
I had the luck to come across a 1980 W123 2.0 petrol Mercedies benze for sale through internet, it was sold as a non runner, needing an engine overhaul and some body work repair, so it sounded like a project for the year ahead.
But when i got to the sellers house i was to find out that the car was on english plates and with out the duty paid, the car had been in the country for a few years, but according to the seller it was not running for the last two years. As i had rented a trailer for the day to transport my purchase home and i drove a good bargin, i decided to go ahead with the transaction.

So i would like to get some advice on how best to sort out the cars duty before i start the restoration project. As i was told the VRT was based on the condition of the vechile at the time of it been registered, so is now the best time to tackle this problem or as the car is now over 30 years old, dose its age give it any amunity from this charge.

I would really apprate any advice on this problem.

If the car is now 30 years old then you can register it here for a flat rate of €50.:)

Have you got the UK registration document ,the V5, you'll need to bring it and the car to your local VRT office, if the date of first registration is over 30 years old its €50 to register it.
Inpsection varies from VRT office to office. I registered a 30+ year old car in Galway and they never left the office to check it, and my brother was making an enquiry about missing paperwork on his and they cleared it without it on the spot, and the car was at home in his shed!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Hold on a second, the car needs to be 30 years old based on the date of first registration. You should be able to find this date on the documentation. So if it was registered before April 6th 1980, the VRT is €50 but if it was registered after April 6th 1980, the VRT is at least €720

Let us know how you're getting on with the registration / restoration :)
