Critique Software

    Hi guys,

has anyone ever used (or even heard of) autocrit.com? I'm looking for software that will analyse my writing and highlight any obvious style weaknesses or problems that I've missed. This one was listed on Writers' Digest "100 top sites" so presumably its legit, but before I hand over money I'd be interested to see if anyone else has used it - or has used anything similar what I could try.

    Thanks,

    Antilles

I'd put up some writing here and invite people to pull it apart. It's next to impossible for a piece of software to critique style properly, as it's such an individual thing.

Some people can write text with really short sentences, and it's punchy and powerful. Others do it and it reads like Dick and Jane. Most looooong sentences are a pain in the butt. Sometimes they are written by Henry James.

    Hi Eileen,

this board is great for feedback in general, but I wouldn't expect someone to do a line by line, word by word analysis of something I wrote. I also wouldn't neccessarily want to post everything that I'd write, so was hoping for an automated system that I could use for a "once over".

Well, you could post a short piece and ask for a word by word breakdown. Normally I don't do that even when I see the need, because it can be seriously depressing to be on the receiving end, but if you ask for it, people will.

Once you know your own stumbling blocks, you can watch out for them.

Write something difficult, throw it up and see what the software makes of it.
I'd be wary of any software. After all, it doesn't understand the context.
