Should be interesting. I'd say some shape or form of multi-tasking is a given!
Also would be nice to see widgets on the lock screen.

I'd be keen to see an upgrade on the iPhone itself. Hopefully Apple will have a prototype on show as well as the new OS. The 3GS vs 3G wasnt a big enough improvement to make me upgrade so now my iPhone is getting old and I'm hoping for something substantial :-)

Hardly. That has been June so far for the new iPhones.

I'd be more inclined to want an OS that is easier on battery life than anything; it's the iPhones one biggest let down.

It is for their pink phone apparently - and deffo not the courier according to paul thurott (often wrong - well in with inner microsoft info tho) and others.

Yeah June for the release but maybe a prototype device will be shown before then.

    Hell will freeze over first.

Anytime I hear prototype I think of this train-wreck:

Apple (thankfully) don't waste our time with hastily slapped together bullsh*t that doesn't even work.

Not that is matters, but while Apple dont show "slapped together bullsh*t" they have show devices some time before they go on sale. The iPad was announced January 27, went on sale April 3rd. First iPhone demoed January 2007, went on sale June.

Either way it's not important. It would be nice to see a new phone soon and the new OS will give a good idea of what it is capable of. I wonder if they will continue support of the original iPhone hardware, I still see people with them, but at some stage Apple have to stop supporting them.

It's only been on the market for 2.5 years though. They'd receive a lot of flak for cutting people off so soon, especially given that it's not an ordinary mobile phone.
I would imagine that they'll probably go into some "extended support" period from June 2010 to June 2011 that only patches any major flaws. OS 4.0 may work for the 2G in a very limited way, but after that the hardware requirements will be too much. However, as it stands, 2G owners currently have to pay for OS updates so you could argue that they've already been cut off.

3G owners will probably be cut off from getting future major OS releases for free from the end of this year.

Thats not correct. Only iPod Touch users have to pay for OS updates.

Indeed, just checked that. Dunno why I thought otherwise.

Then they'll probably exclude 2G owners from this release; the hardware's just too far behind.

3G is arguably just as behind. That's my worry. I don't want a 3GS as I can't justify the cost over my 3G, but I can see myself being cut out of OS4. I also think that would be a marketing strategy by Apple to force 3G/2G owners to buy 3Gs or 4G devices.

I already have the 4.0 beta installed via a developer friend.

Folders is my favourite feature so far, works very well. I'm not the biggest fan of the multitasking though. Every app you open stays open until you hold the icon until it wiggles, then you minus it which closes the app. Its a long drawn out process just to close an app. Hopefully they'll fix this in upcoming beta releases.

The 5x camera zoom is some joke too. Maybe it'll work well on future iPhones. Theres a tonne of other little features I could go on and on about.

How does the phone perform with multitasking? Do you notice the phone running slower or any battery problems?

Digital zoom is always a joke, I'm surprised Apple included it.

Isn't the idea though that you aren't supposed to worry about quitting apps? The system is meant to automatically close them when running low on memory and then restore their previous state if you return to them. My concern is how well this actually works and whether there is a noticeable effect on performance.

Spot on. Battery performance will make or break it I feel.

Today was my first day of daily use since installing 4.0. Unplugged my phone at 7 this morning and did my usual checks, email, twitter, weather etc.

Put the phone to sleep and stuck it in my pocket. Didn't check it again until 10 am. Battery was at 80%. much bigger drop than usual. Had push on my email accounts turned off.

Closed all the apps and opened every stock (not the stocks app, every app that ships on the phone :) ) app on the phone. Left it for another 2 hours and checked it. It only dropped another 4%.

I think when all apps are updated using the new sdk users wont notice any dip in battery life.

It's not your phone, just the joys of beta os. I downgraded myself. Way too buggy for everyday use. After I updated to beta 2 the camera went nuts.

Its not intended for everyday use. Its only out there for developers to be able to test their applications on.

    Hi guys!

I hope someone will be able to help with my problem. Since I have upgraded to Os 4.0 on my iphone 3g I have no MMS functionality. I have no option in messages to turn my MMS on or off in the messaging folder of settings. I've tried a full restore, including setting my phone up as a new iphone rather than restoring from a back up. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the new OS? Here's a picture of my SMS app, note the absence of the camera icon for MMS.

    Thanks folks.

    People actually use MMS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭bellg124

I rarely use it but it's annoying that becaue apple have messed up (again) another feature of the phone has suddenly stopped working.
