    Hi all,

I ply a lot of AVI files on my PS3 through an external HD connected via usb. I'd love to play .MKV but it just won't.

Any ideas or help, i use a mac if these need to be converted ( but i'd rather not have to )

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30399/ps3-media-server

You run that on your mac and stream the files to the PS3
Pretty cool program, but I found it a bit laggy when using wireless, so it would help if your PS3 and mac are both using network cables

can be laggy sometimes over wireless yeh, think it might be down to the ps3 having wireless G whereas media streaming can really benefit from wireless N.

my ps3, macbook and router are all in the same room so no such problems for myself as i use network cables.

i could run a network cable between the mac and ps3 if needed. My router is an old netopia and isn't great to be honest.

I'll try that and see how it goes, cheers.

XenonMKV is a free app that demuxes mkv into mp4 for the xbox. Should also work for the PS3. Oddly enough for some files I have to change the extension to .m4v for the xvox to see the files. Windows Media player has no such issues.

You can also demux with Avidemux.
Demuxing is superquick as all you're doing is changing the container format.

I use a software called mkv2ob to convert mkv files to a ps3 compatible version. Its a really user friendly software. Heres a link to the site.

    http://www.mkv2vob.com/

Its a free software. Its working is self explanatory, however let me know if you have any doubts.

Was very surprised it took so many posts for someone to bring that up.

Only Avidemux out of the three applications mentioned there have mac compatible software which the OP is using.

Ps 3 media server is written in java so it has a client for pretty much every popular OS.

Use that for converting vids for my PSP and it works a treat... There's also a mac version so it's worth a shot
