Deleting my hotmail account

So apparently my hotmail account was hacked recently. I had people coming up to me on nights out saying that i had been sending them weird emails, advertising viagra and all that sorta crap.

I've had it since 2001, not a spot of bother with it up until now. Anyway long story short I've changed to gmail and want away with Mr. Hotmail ASAP.

Only problem is, Windows LIVE won't allow me to delete my account. I've got another hotmail address that I don't really use, no contacts on it or anything. I've ported my Xbox Live over to that, and all my other sites/services/whatnot to the new email address, but still I can't get rid of my bloody original hotmail account.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

I don't know about hotmail but its quite difficult to delete ANY online account you have, google websuicide, its a site which helps you delete online accounts, had my hotmail account attacked recently with someone saying they'd seen nasty things about me on a blog so naturally I opened the bloody thing only for it to mail itself to everyone in my contacts list, grrrrrr:mad:

Maybe back up your contacts and delete them from Hotmail, then just abandon the account?

Spammers may have copied the contacts already, but it would be more trouble than it's worth for them to put them back up so they could keep using your email address.

Aye, that was the first thing I did, and then changed the password to a real feckin hard one to hack. Don't like the idea of the account just sitting there, but ah well... "The unwatched horse dies a quiet death"

    Thanks for the replies chaps.

Did you try closing it as advised here?

    I guess it should work.

I have a few Hotmail/MSN accounts for more than 10 years by now and don't think any should be closed. Actually, one account got hacked/stolen once but I managed to get it back and not going to give it away despite numerous attempts to take it away;)

You never know when you might need an email account so no harm keeping them as long as they don't cost anything. I won't be surprised if at some stage they may start charging for it.
