Tight Muscles...

    Hi all,

Quick query: I'm doing the Ultra next week in Connemara but over the last few long runs I've been having issues with tight muscles, specifically my left hamstring/glutes. I wouldn't describe this as an injury but it is a major irritation when it comes to 12 miles or so. I feel it every time I lift my left leg and the longer I go the more annoying it gets. Bearing in mind I'll be on the road for approx 7 hrs next Sunday this could cause major issues!
I'll be doing plenty of stretching between now and then but was wondering if anyone has any extra advice? Would a massage sort it out any better?
Again, this is not an injury as such, so hopefully the mods will not have an issue with this thread...

A massage no later than Thursday should help. I say no later than Thursday as I'm assuming you've never had one before. If you're not used to racing or training after a sports massage if can be tough.

Thanks RQ, might give that a go so.

If where the Y axis crosses the Y axis is anywhere near Cork, I'd recommend Freda Davoren for a massage. She's a Physical Therapist, ex-international runner and she's really good. Have a look here:

Had the same problem in both my hammers, even though I only run 4 or 5 miles, and thought I had an injury but the physio just massaged it out. Since then I rub some olive oil in if they stiffen up and it seems to do the trick :)

Thanks colblimp, that would have been perfect 18 months ago when I was working in Cork but back in Dublin since. I've booked myself in for a session here on Thursday so fingers crossed that'll do the job.
