Where would be the best place to buy it?

Is that version in english, wouldn't I be better off buying from the USA?

The 'Asian' version is entirely in English. Don't mistake it for the japanese version which is in japanese, the asian version is for the chinese market and rest of asia. It definitely works, I've been playing the asian version since May and it's awesome. Also anyone thinking about getting it don't be put off by the difficulty. It's been blown way out of proportion by the press. The game is perfectly manageable.

Videogameplus is a great site to import games. I will give my vote to it.

    It is immensely frustrating also.

You need at least 2 hours per game session IMO - and I think that is being conservative.

Otherwise - it is difficult to make progress.

......but frustrating as hell. Especially in the early parts where everytime you die you end up back at the start of 1-1.

But once you get past there it opens up. Curve is still quite steep - resetting to key points each time you die - can be v frustrating - but very rewarding as well. Hooked big time and loving it loads - one excellent game.

Got mine on ebay - US version - but I have used the Canadian store in the past and they are grand - just got it cheaper on ebay.

Well it's like the first two levels of ninja gaiden, the opening teaches you how to play the game. When you go back and start from the start after beating it the game is a breeze because you know how to play it and it usually opens up shortcuts to help you out and of course using the online options really eases the game although they don't open up until 1-1 is finished.

To be honest I was never that frustrated by the game, it was always y own fault when I died. I've been far more frustrated by much easier games with awful checkpointing and cheap unavoidable deaths.

Is this a veiled referral to maybe just being an excellent gamer :)

OP - if you get the chance pick it up. But be prepared to kiss goodbye to the rest of your life. You really do need good chunks of time to invest in this - picking it up for 10 min - well maybe useful for building your soul count - but in terms of progression dedication seems to be needed.

I am not sure about this. I don't really think people get frustrated because of cheap game design per se, if something is difficult and there is a big loss for failure (starting all over again) then I think people will get frustrated regardless.

Basically, I don't think people give damn if the game is well designed when they die. I'd argue its always your own fault when you die in any game tbh.

There are quite a few cheap deaths in DS by my accounts.

It's not so noticeable now but in 8 and 16-bit games it was noticeable. Probotector on the megadrive is probably the hardest game i've ever beaten but I never got frustrated when it killed me and I had to start the game all over again becasue it was because I wasn't good enough. However there are countless other games from the era that were tough but frustratingly so and no fun. Try playing the horrors of some of the games AVGN plays. I think Demons Souls taps into this old school sentimentality and gets it as right as a harsh but fair oldie like Probotector.

I find a lot of games these days have sections of awful bad design that are unbelieveably frustrating but thanks to checkpoints or recharging health they are tolerable since you can brute force your way through them. Be it a terrible boss or a crap escort or stealth mission. Or a good example, the part where you have to push the cage in God of War 1 while getting attacked (the only bad part in a fantastic experience). It still makes them examples of crap game design though.

I'm a big fan of Demons' Souls, but there are moments when the checkpointing system was ludicrously harsh. I'm thinking world 5 here. The rest of the game was pleasantly challenging, world 5 was just designed to make you suffer. I like the old school challenge, and the game constantly pushes you to get better. But when you're pushed off a cliff mere seconds away from the checkpoint it took you an hour or so to reach, it is frustrating to say the least. I enjoyed most of my time with the game, but I don't think I've ever sworn at a game as much as at some points. Call it nostalgia or emulating older design tactics, but there were parts in Demons' Souls (again, ****ing World 5) that were badly designed, in which the purposeful hard design damaged the game rather than improved it. There weren't too many of those moments (as I said, I loved the rest of the game) but there were moments when I truly appreciated the far more liberal checkpointing of recent games. Repeating a five minute frustrating bit is more appealing than repeating a sixty minute frustrating bit.

That said: OP, import it, its great :) Just don't blame us when you're crying.
