Major problem transferring files

I recently tried to copy music from a friends laptop to my 160g classic. The laptop ran out of battery when I was doing this and now all of the 24g of music that I have on the ipod is recognised as "other" info by my ipod which now basically thinks that I dont have any songs.

I tried to manually copy music from the ipod folder you can browse when connected via USB but when I try to copy and paste the files anywhere it comes up with the message "Cannot copy DFUP: The parameter is incorrect". THe songs themselves dont play in itunes and will only play around the first five seconds with windows media player before cutting out. Also, when connected to my mates itunes my ipod is not recognised as its name, its just called ipod.

I've done this before when the laptop died with no problems. An error message came up right before the laptop cut out but I didnt manage to write down what it said, I wasnt actually syncing anything at the precise moment that this happened.

Does anybody have any info or help with this one? Or even have a good idea about what to do... call apple? Forget about the music? I've had a browse through some forums online and I havent seen anything like this discussed. Thanks

The problem for me is that I'm a long way from home with my original itunes and hardrive. I've reset the ipod a good few times but if I do a full factory restore i'll lose all of the music I had on it. :(
