    Hi,

Getting an iphone 3gs next week and been doing a bit of reading up on it.But can someone put into simple, basic language what jailbreaking an iphone means and how its done? Also, what are the benefits, uses, pro's and con's?Obviously it makes the warranty null and void?Could it actually corrupt the iphone with a virus?Would it be pointless for someone inexperienced?Excuse my ignorance, new to all this!

Cool Mr.S,,thankssounds like a runner for me.Been doing a little research but just wasn't fully sure about the whole process.Just one more thing,is there a number of different ways to jailbreak the iphone?Or is one way better than others?Been reading about blackrain or something???

if ur buyin it new it could be on fw 3.1.3
theres no way to jailbreak that firmware at the moment but there's rumours one will be released after the next update

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

Thanks, how can I tell what firmware is on it?
Also read that if iphone runs out of battery or gets switched off,I'll loose apps and data and have to run the jailbreak again?Anyone know is that true?Seems like a bit of a pain if it is..

go to settings - general - about, it will say version 3.1.?
what ur thinkin of is a tethered jb, it means if ya turn off the phone or it crashes or restarts, ya need to connect it to a pc and run blackrain again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

So,does that mean if I turn off a jailbroken iphone,it wont work until I hook it back up to my PC and run jb again?or will I still be able to turn it on and make calls/text/surf net etc?

it wont turn on fully until ya run blackrain

You wont find an iPhone in the stores that you can jailbreak or unlock at the moment. You need to wait until a new jailbreak is released. No one knows when that will be.

I got a new Iphone 3 weeks ago with o2 bill pay.
It's FW 3.1.3 and I successfully Jailbroke. I never had an Iphone before and had no JB experience. I just read up and did it.
Lots of sites say it cant be done but a couple have he know how.
Google has all the answers if you dig deep enough.
Also some people I know on 3.1.2 have the tethered JB and can't power off or reset etc, I dont have that issue, I can reboot all day if I want to.

Jailbreaking it unleashes a whole new world of apps and customization.

True and most likely if it's a new model made in the past few weeks.
But it's not the firmware that dictates if it's a tethered jb or not , its the bootrom version (359.3.2) that requires your phone to be tethered after reboot.
See the poster above^^^ he got lucky with his new 3GS having the old bootrom , very lucky !

I can't see the requirment to tether jailbreak been the case for much longer .
GeoHot (and others) have released videos of new jailbreak techniques which show untethered jailbreaks on new devices. These new expolits are written it's just all about timing as to when to release to the community... The cat and mouse game continues.

Sit tight , enjoy the show as the next few weeks will be very interesting in the Apple hack community , with the iPad jailbroken yesterday :D expect new jailbreak methods very soon .

Bobby you sausage that's the baseband .
To find out your ibootrom version put your phone into DFU mode and plug it into iTunes .
You will get a summary of your phone status also showing bootrom type.

Not sure what my bootrom was but my baseband is 05.12.01 I presume with this baseband that it was the most recent of Iphones but still JB.

your phone is not jailbreakable yet, when the jailbreak comes for your phone you will not be required to hook it up to pc when you restart it.

DONT LISTEN TO JARVIS, there is currently no way of jaibreaking YOUR iphone, all these website are scams.

if you want to keep up to day with the latest progress goto

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for the dev teams contributions
    or
    http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/
    for geohot.

    or twitter @iphone_dev and @geohot

All the other websites just steal from them and sell it, you should never have to pay for a jailbreak.

as for the benefits of jailbreaking:
    -themes
    -ringtones

    -mp3 downloading software (MewSeek)
    -root access to your phone
-palm pre style app switching (http://www.hardwareinsight.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ProSwitcher_card1.jpg)
    -background apps
    -easy access to essential settings
    -actually a good flash light
    -run skype from 3g
-byte sms, a much better version of text message
    -Folders
    -Ability to download youtube videos
    -snes emulator
    -google voice app
-security programs (including the ability to find your phone when lost)

basically everything thats cool about the iphone come from jailbreaking it

    "Don't listen to Jarvis"?????
What's that all about? Why not?

90% of websites will tell you it can't be done. I'm aware of what Dev-Team and geohot say.
The link I sent Toby explains how to do it and costs zilch, is not a scam and worked perfectly for my Iphone 3g on3.1.3 with 05.12.01 baseband!!!

Kjl, is it that you don't believe I've done it or my phone differs from Toby's???

Toby, read the site I sent you and follow the instructions. If you do it, please post your success story back here so I can have my apology from kjl.

    Thanks Guil.
Think we have multi confusion here.

I gave the story of what I did with my 3g on fw 3.1.3 and Toby asked how I JB "that" phone. I took this to mean my 3g.

In the OP Toby said he was thinking of getting a 3gs so I presumed 3g was anoption too as he hasn't got an Iphone yet and both o2 and vodafone do 8gb 3g Iphones.

the link I sent him does explain that it's not for 3gs.

lol i was ragin when i saw it, i thought i might be able to jb, ah well i'll just have to wait

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

thanks guys for the help and advice(sorry jarvis,I should've made my request a bit clearer!).Gonna wait until a jb for the 3gs is released and give it a go.Seems like it really opens up the potential of the iphone.Plus I like the fact that theres very little risk to the actual phone and I can just restore whenever I want.Getting my number ported today so looking forward to messing around on it.Now all I gotta do is source the best free apps!!!!
