Hi I have two sheds in my house with asbestos roofs. I am aware I cannot smash them up and throw them in the dump. However I have no clue how to get rid of them. How do you get rid of an asbestos roof and what is the cheapest way to do this legally and safely.
    Thanks

There are specialised firms who do it but it is very very expensive as the material has to be taken down, stored and sent to Germany for disposal.

There are landfills in Ireland that accept Asbestos, for example Waste disposal company 'Greenstar' has recently been given permission to accept Asbestos at a landfill in Kilconnell in Galway.

I suspect there are more dotted around the country too. If you were to abide by the law (as you should ) then you would get it removed by Specialists, which would cost you an arm and a leg.

Here is some further info on it:

Flog thanks for that. Acording to the citizens advice the council should have a list of approved contractors. I phoned Dunlaoghaire Rathdown county council and they say look in the yellow pages they have no such list. This is a disgrace given citizens advice and the health implications of incorrect disposal. Another case of the public service taking our money and not doing their job.
Anyway I am going to follow this up as it is a significant issue.
    Thanks

Let us/me know how you get on, as I also have a shed with an asbestos roof which will need to come down soon!

I think it's a case of the Citizens Advice saying something that may not necessarily be true!
All councils in this country do things differently.
I would suggest that you do the simple thing and click on this link and start phoning.
Asbestos removal is not something I would tackle myself, even though it is not rocket science, best left to the experts!
