iTunes Plus - Where do Apple Source Their Music?

    As above, really!

I was wondering where do Apple source their music for the iTunes store. I mean; do they simply get the distribution rights and rip the CD and post it up; or do they get a completely digital copy from the producer and encode that then?

Just a general question really as I'm tempted to start using the store. I'm tired of having piles of CDs lying around!

    Hoping you can help! :)

Yeah interesting really - like I'm picturing this bloke in some dark corner of Apple's headquarters putting cd's in and out of his mac pro from a never ending pile sitting next to him!!
Seriously tho, if I had to guess, I'd say Apple or some sub contractor are supplied with the original masters of tracks. These would be from whichever record companies that want to sell tracks on iTunes and could be 192khz versions or whatever, (perhaps on some large hard drive?) and the encoding to aac etc is done from them.

But I'd love to know precisely as well!

    Hi Forgone

As an Apple employee i can tell you that we do get a complete digital copy from the Producer/Record Company and encode that then with the latest iTunes plus Audio Quality.

Have a look around the store anyways before you join.

    Thanks.

Thank you for your replies Simon and Yoda!

If it's a high quality digital source then that only makes me want to join iTunes more. The question is whether I'll be able to get the iPod adapter put into my car before my order comes through!
