Playing Lotto on-line - Only for Some

I've been playing this for a few months now using my Halifax Debit card with no probs, but have changed now to an Ulster Bank Visa Debit card which won't work.

Lotto ppl say they only accept Credit cards as its proof your over 18 but I must have originally entered by Debit card under the Visa Credit card option on their site and it worked but Ulster Bank Visa Debit won't work.

My point really is this, can only people with Credit cards (who maybe up to their eyes in debt) play lotto online, if so seems a bit elitist and so unfair.

I've emailed them to enquire if I can even EFT money into my account (like a bookies a/c) but it seems it's Credit cards only, it is 2010 isn't it :D

Saw this on their website however, it does not say which credit card companies do this so check first.

"Are there charges for using a credit card to play online?
The National Lottery and most of the main financial institutions do not charge for uploading funds from your credit card to the Play Online wallet. However, it has been brought to our attention that some credit card providers treat this as a cash advance and charge accordingly. We suggest you check with your credit card provider prior to adding funds to your wallet."

sounds quite reasonable to me. how else would you suggest they know the player is over 18?

If having a CC is their only proof of being over 18, it's not great.

There are alternative ways of getting a CC if you are under 18. There are 3V cards (which probably won't be accepted, as they are really a prepaid debit card) but isn't it also possible to get a CC connected to your parents account if you are under 18? I think my younger cousin has one (I think it's only for an emergency or something - as far as I know, he doesn't use it).

You only have to be 16 to get a 3V card so that wouldn't work.

Well 3V can be used with paypal then use paypal with PaddyPower(So you can bet on PaddyPower when your 16 :P )

    Drivers Licence/passport/birthcert etc.

They are reviewing their system and welcome customer feedback.

I pointed out that Visa Debit is becoming very popular Aldi/Lidi/ESB etc and could make Laser redundant in time and that PTSB is introducing them in September so hopefully they will take this on board I also pointed out that there are other ways they could validate age. (god their so backward)

Ulster Bank Debit Card You have to enter your name exactly as it appears on the card...they used MR on mine and double spacing between words so I have re-entered the details on my lotto a/c and msg said these changes will be implemented (didn't work instantly) but hopefully tomorrow...fingers crossed. :)

It says Mr. Tim x on my card as well, but I usually enter my name as Tim x (i.e without the Mr.) and it works (didn't try it on Lotto though).

I think I tried entering the Mr. Tim x before and it wouldn't let me!

I re-entered my details exactly and still no joy.

    turning things around a bit.....

the message I kept getting when trying to add funds was.....you have no authorisation...something like that.

    Halifax Visa Debit
    worked....Ulster Banks Visa Debit won't
(both from the same bank group) so where is the blockage/fault most likely to be.....?

I wrote to Ulster Bank ages ago about not being able to use their Visa Debit Card with the Lotto on line which I could with the Halifax card but not a word back.

Anyway I left my lotto a/c open with just €1 in it and last night just for the crack I tried to xfer funds into my a/c and whey and behold it worked:) even tried again today and no bother.:)

I doubt anyone tweaked anything as the lotto site clearly says:- enter your Credit Card details...... If I win the big one I'll let ye know:D

I thought there wasn't and thats why it is ideal for companies online, as the "proofing" is already done. If there is some oddball one for kids I expect it is highlighted on verification as not being proof of being 18+

    Drivers Licence/passport/birthcert etc.
So would you be willing to pay a premium for all the admin involved with this? CC makes perfect sense to me.

3V is available to anyone over 16, so that is a potential problem. The retailer can identify a 3V voucher though, so they should be able to do an extra check on anyone trying to use them for age verification.
